Job Description
The Microbiology Laboratory Supervisor oversees day-to-day testing operations, ensures regulatory compliance, and supervises laboratory personnel. The role requires strong technical expertise in microbial identification, environmental monitoring, and quality assurance to guarantee accurate and timely analytical results.
Key Responsibilities:
Operations & Workflow Management
Oversee daily lab workflows, sample processing, and test turnaround times.
Assist in proficiency testing and affiliated laboratory accreditation requirements.
Prioritize and schedule staff assignments to ensure complete shift coverage.
Maintain inventories of reagents, media, and lab supplies, ordering materials as needed.
Oversee calibration, maintenance, validation, and troubleshooting of laboratory instruments.
Quality Assurance & Regulatory Compliance
Ensure all testing complies with safety and regulatory standards (e.g., FDA, GMP, CLIA, CAP, or OSHA).
Review and approve test data, environmental monitoring reports, and final documentation.
Investigate non-conformance events and the implementation of effective CAPAs (Corrective and Preventive Actions).
Assist in maintaining the laboratory’s internal quality control (QC) programs.
Personnel Leadership & Training
Direct supervision of microbiologists, lab analysts, and technicians.
Conduct training on Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and perform ongoing staff competency assessments.
Mentor team members and resolve operational or interpersonal conflicts.
Qualifications & Requirements:
Education
Bachelor’s in Microbiology, Biology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related life science.
Experience
3 to 5 years of hands‑on microbiology laboratory experience.
1 to 2 years of proven leadership or supervisory experience.
Strong technical background in microscopy, aseptic techniques, microbial limits testing, bioburden testing, or identification assays.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
In-depth understanding of Chemical and Biological Laboratory Health and Safety requirements.
Ability to follow and periodically review Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Proficient with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and Microsoft Office.
Strong root‑cause analysis and problem‑solving skills.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
