Muslim Spiritual Advisor (Chaplain) at Northeastern University
MUSLIM SPIRITUAL ADVISOR (“Chaplain”) at NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY, BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS
NU’s Spiritual Advisor positions cover several classic “chaplaincy” or “campus ministry” functions - and advance the global experiential educational mission of the University and its Center for Spirituality, Dialogue, and Service (CSDS) (see ), which coordinates Spiritual Life across the University’s Global Campus Network.
A successful candidate (or candidates, if open to a shared position) will embody a passion for working with Muslim undergraduate and graduate students from diverse US and international backgrounds; an ability to collaboratively plan and develop programs with NU’s dynamic student group, the Islamic Society of Northeastern University (ISNU) and participate in its leadership team meetings, Monday evening Deen and Dine learning/community building sessions, and weekly jummuah; interest in interfaith dialogue and collaboration and availability for monthly interfaith NU Spiritual Advisors Team meetings (Thursday afternoons); experience in teaching, speaking, preaching, and/or spiritual/pastoral advising and care; skills and interest in inter-Muslim Sunni-Shi’a dialogue and cooperation; appreciation of the dynamics of young adult Muslim life in US society and higher education; learning and formation in one’s own Muslim spiritual/religious tradition and respect for others’; commitment to developing student leaders who are culturally adept, ethically reflective, and spiritually grounded global citizens and residents of the vibrant Boston and wider NU community; and a powerful commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. Spiritual Advisors are supervised by Alexander Levering Kern, the Center’s Executive Director and lead Spiritual Advisor for the University.
Overall, Spiritual Advisors positions at Northeastern:
· Design effective outreach/hospitality/engagement approaches to students, faculty, andstaffwithin the Spiritual Advisor’s ownreligious/spiritual tradition.
· Advise student organization(s)serving the SA's specific religious/spiritual tradition
· Work with the Center Executive Director and staff to plan and implement dynamic programs of spirituality, dialogue and service -- bringing the religious
teachings, practices, and culture(s) of the Spiritual Advisor's specific traditionto bear on the interfaith/intercultural mission of the Center.
· Meet with Northeastern community members from one’s own tradition for spiritual guidance/care/counseling.
· Be available as neededto meet with and serve students of all religious/spiritual traditions, and none.
· Meet with team of fellow Spiritual Advisors for dialogue and program planning.
· With theExecutive Director of the Center, work to build bridges of communication and cooperation with the Spiritual Advisor’s specific religious/spiritual
tradition locally, nationally, and globally.
· Serve as a representative of the Spiritual Advisor’s religious/spiritual tradition in University forums, interfaith services, events, conferences and symposia,
experiential education, service/dialogue programs, urban and foreign studytrips, academic classes,etc.
· Where appropriate, coordinate services and ceremonies specific to the Spiritual Advisor’s religious/spiritual tradition, or arrange for religious leadership to
conduct services

The position is part-time, hours to be determined, and with the right candidates, may be a shared position. Individuals may also apply on an “interim” basis for the remainder of the semester or academic year. In light of the COVID pandemic, much or all of the work may be done remotely.
