Job description
GENERAL SUMMARY:
nUnder the direction and supervision of the responsible Registered Nurse (RN), performs specific patient care duties to meet safety and comfort needs of the patient. Provides input to assist the RN in planning and implementing patient care. Responds to emergent situations according to established procedures. Recognizes and participates in own continuing education. The Nurse Assistant follows the Henry Ford Health System Team Member Standards of Excellence in all interactions.

nOral Care
nHair Care
nGrooming and shaving
nLinen changes
nSkin care as directed
nElimination:
nAssists with elimination needs
nAdministers enemas (non-medicated)
nEmpties and changes ostomy bags on patients with healed stomas
nPerforms perineal care and incontinence care
nChanges diapers
nEmpties urinary catheter as directed
nApplies and empties fecal containment devices, per business unit process
nApplies condom catheters
nVital Measurements:
nTemperature, pulse and respiration
nBlood Pressure
nIntake & Output
nPulse Oximetry
nHeight and weight
nPresence of pain per business unit process
nCollects Specimens (per business unit process):
nVenipuncture
nBlood Glucometer
nUrine
nStool
nSputum
nNasogastric Secretions
nFood and Nutrition:
nFeeds patients
nDocuments food intake
nPrepares full strength tube feeding under the supervision of the RN: fills and labels the feed bag; does not connect tube feeding, perform placement checks or do residual checks. Activity/Exercise (as directed):
nAmbulates patients
nTurns and positions patients in a comfortable position
nTransfers patients from bed to chair and bed to stretcher
nAssists in transportation of patients from department to department as directed
nSafety:
nCares for patients in isolation
nReports patient findings and observations to the RN
nReports abnormal findings
nAssists the Unit Care team in all emergency situations
nReapplies restraints per the direction of the RN and completes safety checks
nOther Tasks (under direction of RN and per business unit process) :
nEKG
nPlaces telemetry leads
nApplies heat and cold, antiembolic devices, and sequential compression devices per direction of the RN
nChanges non sterile dressings under the direction of the RN
nPost mortem care
nPrepares room for admission
nAssists in patient discharge as directed
nParticipates in the care of patient belongings
nCommunication :
nMaintains patient privacy and confidentiality
nAnswers call lights
nGreets patients and visitors
nInforms the patient of what they are going to do for the patient
nObtains report form the RN and gives report to the RN
nObtains help for the patient and reports patient complaints promptly
nAssists in collection of information upon direction
nManagement of Supplies and Materials:
nAssures that supplies are available
nStocks materials to areas identified by the unit
nAssures that equipment is functioning properly
nAssures that equipment is clean and stored in the correct place.
nEDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
nnnHigh school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
n
nnCompletion of a Nurse Assistant program with or without experience in the Nurse Assistant role or Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA-preferred) with or without experience in the Nurse Assistant role OR currently enrolled in a nursing program and have successfully completed the Fundamentals of Nursing course or foreign trained and licensed RN who has relocated to the United States and does not hold a Michigan RN license.

n nCERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:
nnnCertified Nurse Assistant (CNA) preferred or are currently enrolled in a nursing program and have successfully completed Fundamentals of Nursing or successfully completed the Henry Ford Health System Nurse Assistant Program.

nnComplete BLS Heartsaver Certification during orientation.
