Job description

Job Summary

The Obstetric Nursing position is responsible for providing high-quality classroom and clinical instruction in obstetric nursing, with an emphasis on maternal and newborn health. The position prepares nursing students to provide safe, compassionate, and evidence-based care to women throughout the prenatal, labor and delivery, and postpartum periods.

The faculty member will teach assigned nursing courses, supervise and evaluate students in clinical settings, provide academic advising and counseling, and ensure that course content and clinical experiences align with the objectives and standards of the Tuskegee University Department of Nursing. Responsibilities also include evaluating student performance, maintaining accurate academic and clinical records, collaborating with healthcare agencies, and participating in curriculum development and departmental activities.

Responsibilities

Provide classroom instruction in obstetric/maternal nursing, including antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and newborn care.

Develop and deliver course materials , including syllabi, lectures, assignments, examinations, presentations, and other instructional resources.

Provide clinical instruction and supervision to nursing students in obstetric and maternal-child health settings, including labor and delivery, antepartum, postpartum, and newborn care.

Demonstrate evidence-based obstetric nursing practices , including maternal assessment, fetal monitoring, labor management, postpartum assessment, newborn care, and recognition of complications.

Supervise and evaluate student clinical performance through direct observation, clinical assignments, skills demonstrations, simulation, and established evaluation tools.

Assess student learning and academic progress by preparing, administering, and grading examinations, assignments, clinical evaluations, and other assessments.

Provide timely and constructive feedback to students regarding academic, clinical, professional, and interpersonal performance.

Facilitate clinical conferences and simulation experiences to strengthen students’ clinical judgment, critical thinking, communication, and decision-making skills.

Maintain accurate student records , including attendance, grades, clinical evaluations, competency records, and other required academic documentation.

Advise and mentor nursing students regarding academic progress, professional development, clinical performance, licensure preparation, and career opportunities.

Maintain current knowledge and competency in obstetric nursing through continuing education, professional development, current literature, research, and evidence-based practice.

Collaborate with clinical agencies and healthcare professionals to coordinate appropriate clinical learning experiences and ensure students meet course and program outcomes.

Ensure compliance with university, nursing program, clinical agency, and applicable regulatory requirements , including patient safety, confidentiality, infection control, and professional nursing standards.

Participate in curriculum development and evaluation , including reviewing and revising obstetric nursing course content, learning objectives, clinical experiences, and teaching strategies.

Participate in faculty meetings, committees, accreditation activities, student recruitment, and other departmental or university activities as assigned.

Serve as a professional role model by demonstrating ethical nursing practice, professionalism, leadership, cultural sensitivity, effective communication, and commitment to patient- and family-centered care.

Maintain appropriate clinical practice and professional licensure/certifications required for teaching obstetric nursing.

Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Department Chair, Program Director, Dean, or other designated university administrator.

Preferred Qualifications

Master of Science Degree in Nursing or a Master’s Degree in a clinical specialty is required. An earned Doctoral Degree is preferred, and a minimum of two years of general nursing experience. Must hold a current, unencumbered Alabama Registered Nurse license.

Physical Demands

Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods during classroom, laboratory, and clinical instruction.

Ability to walk throughout clinical facilities and nursing laboratories while supervising students.

Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach when demonstrating or observing patient-care procedures.

Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull nursing equipment and supplies, including equipment weighing up to approximately 25 pounds as needed.

Ability to assist with or demonstrate safe patient positioning, transfers, mobility, and other obstetric nursing procedures.

Ability to use hands and fingers for frequent handling of medical equipment, instruments, supplies, computers, and instructional materials.

Ability to maintain physical proximity to students and patients while providing instruction, supervision, and clinical demonstrations.

Ability to respond promptly to clinical situations and emergencies.
