Job description

Optical DispenserUnder direct supervision, measures patient facial features, adjusts eyeglass frames, and assists patients in selecting optical items to conform to corresponding optical prescriptions and established procedures.Essential responsibilities include:Patient procedures and activitiesAssemble patient education materialsAssist provider in patient examinations and proceduresConsult with provider concerning procedures and patient conditionComplete patient forms and recordsLaboratoriesClean work areaAttach temples to framesCut lenses to specified size and shapeFit finished lenses into framesHandle computer printoutsInspect lenses and eyeglasses to verify correct processing of prescriptionInvestigate lost, misplaced or incorrectly filled prescription ordersPackage eyeglasses in containers for courier pick upRefine shape of lenses by smoothing edgesAdjust patient eyeglass framesAssist patient in selecting optical itemsExamine eyeglasses from laboratoryMake minor repairs and adjustments to eyeglassesMaintain optical suppliesMeasure patient facial featuresReceive and ship finished eyeglassesMaterials and suppliesFill request for equipment and suppliesMaintain and order suppliesMaintain records of material usage/inventory levelsClear paper jams and performs routine maintenanceOperate copier equipmentAdministrative and otherCollect and compile cumulative data and statisticsMaintain department logsAnswer telephones and take messagesOrient and train new or less experienced personnelServe as resource person to co-workers by answering procedural questions and assisting in problem solvingLocate personnel by paging system or beeperAttend conferences, meetings and in-service training programsAssume other activities and responsibilities from time to time as directedUpholds Kaiser Permanente’s policies and procedures, principles of responsibilities and applicable state, federal and local lawsAssists members with the selection of frames and lensesTakes orders for eyewear and miscellaneous optical itemsDispenses and adjusts eyewear and ophthalmic appliances, making minor repairs as required. Takes facial measurements of members to fit eyewear needsProvides members with information regarding eyewear, product options and eyewear services. Manages and resolves member eyewear complaintsCreates and maintains neat, attractive and sales effective frame displaysMaintains departmental supplies including but not limited to frame inventory, eyeglass cases, tools and equipment for daily operationsReturns re-called frames/optical items by specified due dates. Inspects eyeglasses to insure conformance with prescribed/ordered specificationsProcesses jobs in bench roomContacts members, optical lab and clinics concerning eyewear orders and prescriptions. Determines member vision eligibility and benefitsAttends staff meetings and trainings as required, maintaining current knowledge of all computer systems designated for the operation of the departmentEstablishes and maintain courteous, cooperative relations when interacting with other personnel, Health Plan members, and the publicMay perform other duties as requiredBasic qualifications include:One (1) year of recent full-time optical dispensing experience which may include complete optical lab bench room workCurrent knowledge of optical theory, practices and lab techniques-interpretation of prescription lenses/products available and entire eyewear fabrication process including measure, fit, adjust and repairHigh School Diploma/GEDAdditional requirements:ABO Certification. Certificate of completion in Optical Dispensing from an accredited Ophthalmic Optics schoolNotes:Weekends are requiredThis is an on-call position, days and hours may vary
