Job description

PALLIATIVE MEDICINE | OPEN RANK/ OPEN TRACK FACULTY

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA

The Department of Medicine, Division of General, Geriatric, and Palliative Medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine seeks a board-certified or board-eligible palliative medicine physician to join its Section of Palliative Medicine.

This is a full-time faculty position available at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor on a tenure-eligible or tenure-ineligible track. Rank, track, and compensation will be commensurate with the successful candidates qualifications, experience, scholarly accomplishments, and academic interests.

For an exceptionally qualified senior candidate with a distinguished record of clinical excellence, scholarship, leadership, and national or international recognition, appointment to an endowed chair may be considered, subject to University review and approval.

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary palliative care program dedicated to improving quality of life for adults living with serious illness. The faculty member will provide compassionate, evidence-based care emphasizing complex symptom management, communication, advance care planning, and support for patients and families.

Clinical responsibilities will include both outpatient palliative medicine practice and inpatient consultation across UVA Health. The distribution of inpatient and outpatient clinical effort will be determined based on the successful candidates expertise, programmatic needs, and the evolving needs of the patients and communities served by UVA Health.

This is a primarily clinical position. Protected effort may be considered for candidates with active externally funded research programs or demonstrated accomplishments and substantive leadership responsibilities in medical education. The final allocation of clinical, research, educational, and administrative effort will be based on the candidates qualifications, documented productivity, active funding, programmatic priorities, and available resources.

The successful candidate will also have opportunities to:

* Teach and mentor medical students, residents, fellows, and other health professions learners.

* Participate in interdisciplinary education and faculty development.

* Contribute to clinical program development, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives.

* Develop collaborative clinical, educational, or research initiatives across the Department of Medicine, UVA School of Medicine, and UVA Health.

* Participate in scholarly work as appropriate to the candidates faculty track, rank, and professional interests.

* Help shape the continued clinical and academic growth of palliative care services across UVA Health.

The Section of Palliative Medicine is a growing, interdisciplinary team dedicated to high-quality serious illness care across UVA Health. The combined inpatient and outpatient teams include approximately 15 physicians and nurse practitioners, 6 nurses, an LCSW, and additional collaborating professionals who support care across settings. We provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services, with:

* A longstanding outpatient palliative care clinic, embedded in the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center and operating five days per week.

* A robust inpatient consult service supporting patients across UVA Health.

* An ACGME-accredited palliative medicine fellowship, offering opportunities for teaching, mentorship, and curriculum development.

* Close collaboration with UVAs NCI-designated Cancer Center, enabling integrated oncology-palliative care models, shared care pathways, and joint program development.

Faculty benefit from a supportive academic environment, strong interdisciplinary partnerships, and opportunities to participate in clinical innovation, education, and scholarship aligned with UVA Healths mission and ASPIRE values.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications include:

* Hold an MD, DO, or equivalent medical degree.

* Have completed an ACGME-accredited fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

* Be board-certified or board-eligible in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

* Be eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Candidates considered for appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level must demonstrate a record of clinical, educational, scholarly, or leadership achievement commensurate with the University of Virginia School of Medicines criteria for appointment at that rank.

Candidates considered for an endowed chair must possess a distinguished record of achievement and a national or international reputation appropriate to the chairs purpose and expectations.

Preferred qualifications include:

* Experience providing palliative medicine care in inpatient and/or outpatient settings, with interest in practicing across both environments.

* Demonstrated excellence in communication, complex symptom management, and serious-illness care.

* Experience teaching and mentoring medical students, residents, fellows, or interprofessional learners.

* A record of educational scholarship, curriculum development, or educational leadership.

* A record of scholarly productivity and, as applicable, active or recent extramural research funding.

* Experience in clinical research, health services research, quality improvement, or implementation science.

* Experience developing or expanding clinical programs and interdisciplinary services.

* Evidence of leadership within an academic medical center, professional organization, or palliative care program.

Application Instructions:

Applicants should submit the following materials:

* Cover letter describing the applicants clinical experience, academic interests, and interest in the position. Applicants seeking protected research or educational effort should also describe their relevant accomplishments, current funding, and proposed contributions.

* Curriculum vitae.

* Statement describing contributions or potential contributions to the UVA Health ASPIRE values.

* Contact information for three professional references, including name, title, institutional affiliation, email address, and telephone number.

Applications that do not contain all required documents may not receive full consideration. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

The selected candidate will be required to complete a background check and pre-employment health and drug screening.
