nSummary:
nThe Pathologist Assistant functions as assistant to the Director of Division (Pathology) in the preparation and performance of gross surgical examinations. Responsible for processing surgical pathology specimens, including receipt, dissection, description, and examining, dissecting, and processing tissues. Also responsible for gross autopsy prosection and preliminary autopsy reports. Supervision is not a regular responsibility of this position but may provide guidance and training to technologists, students and residents.
nResponsibilities:
nnnExamines tissue samples to assist the pathologist in diagnosing disease and provides a general description of the sample and either determines if further analysis is needed or presents to Pathologist for final diagnoses.

nnAssists the pathologist in the performance of the pro-section, including external examination, in situ inspection, evisceration, dissection, recording of data, dictation of descriptive information, and any such material relating to gross autopsy findings.

nnAssists the pathologist in procuring autopsy material for tumor banking and tissue procurement and such bio analytic procedures as microbiological cultures, blood and serum analysis, and chemical and toxicological testing.
n
nnEnsures proper restoration of bodies including notification of such biological hazards as contagious disease or radioactivity.
n
nnPrepares quality assurance reports and workload reports.
n
nnProvides technical direction in autopsy techniques for groups viewing an autopsy.
n
nnCoordinates the support of photography services.
n
nnMay train residents in the gross evaluation and dissection of surgical specimens and autopsy prosection.

n nQualifications/Requirements:
nExperience: Must have one to two years grossing experience in a teaching institution working with pathology residents.
nKnowledgeable with voice dictation software such as Voicebrook.
nEducation: A Master’s degree from a NAACLS accredited Pathologist Assistant program.
nLicenses / Certifications: NYS License required
nCertification through ASCP or AAPA preferred.
