General Pathologist (Locum Tenens) Somerville, NJ

Full-Time Anatomic & Clinical Pathology Emergency Privileges Available for Immediate Start

Are you a Board-Certified Pathologist looking for a high-volume institutional role in Central Jersey? RWJ University Hospital Somerset in Somerville, New Jersey, is seeking an experienced physician to provide crucial ongoing coverage following the departure of a full-time staff member. Because the facility can grant emergency clinical privileges, this position offers an accelerated onboarding pathway for a qualified provider ready to step into a stable, full-time weekday schedule.

The Opportunity Join an established laboratory team within a Level 2 Trauma center, taking over a diverse surgical and cytopathology caseload.

Clinical Scope: Manage general anatomic and clinical pathology services. Key daily responsibilities include:

Surgical pathology sign-out and rush specimen reviews.

Time-sensitive frozen section analysis and intraoperative consultations.

Cytopathology sign-out and performing rapid on-site evaluations (ROSE) for fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology specimens.

Predictable Case Volume: Maintain a highly productive clinical pace within an active laboratory ecosystem. Expected daily volumes include:

Surgical Pathology: 25 to 40 cases per day (9,000 cases annually).

Cytopathology: 3 to 5 cases per day (1,000 cases annually).

Fine-Needle Aspirations (FNA): 2 to 3 cases per day (400 cases annually).

Team & Support Structure: Work alongside three established, full-time pathology MDs and a comprehensive laboratory technical and clerical support staff. The locum physician has no supervisory or administrative oversight responsibilities for Advanced Practice Providers.

The Schedule: Full-time, on-site weekday coverage, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM 5:00 PM . This position requires participation in a rotational night and weekend call schedule.

Integrated Technology: Smooth, fully centralized workflow utilizing a single Epic EMR system implemented uniformly across all laboratory and hospital departments.

Location: Somerville, NJ Somerville is a vibrant, historic borough in Somerset County, widely celebrated for having one of the most active and award-winning downtown areas in Central Jersey.

Dynamic Downtown: Downtown Somerville features a bustling, walkable Main Street lined with historic architecture, highly rated artisan bakeries, diverse international restaurants, and trendy boutiques.

Community Energy: Known for massive community gatherings, including the famous summer Friday Cruise Nights (classic car shows), outdoor music festivals, and a thriving local arts scene.

Commuter Convenience: Offers a relaxed, suburban lifestyle with easy access to major transit links, including its own NJ Transit station on the Raritan Valley Line for direct travel across the region.

Compensation & Shift Logistics Contract Structure: Fixed hourly and call-coverage compensation with robust built-in daily and weekly overtime protections (overtime rates apply after 12 consecutive hours worked in a single day).

Assignment Timeline: Urgent, ASAP start following the completion of emergency privileging. Coverage is ongoing until a permanent replacement is successfully onboarded.

Interviewing Process: Interviews are being fast-tracked directly with Dr. Valerie Fitzhugh (Rutgers RWJMS Pathology Chair) and Dr. Brian Stanford (Laboratory Medical Director).

Candidate Requirements To meet the rigorous compliance and clinical standards of this regional medical center, candidates must be fully credentialed specialists:

Degree: MD or DO from an accredited medical program.

Board Status: Strict Board Certification in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) is required.

Licensure: Must hold an active, unencumbered New Jersey State Medical License.
