Patient Safety Companion - Float TeamServe as a Patient Safety Companion on the Float Team, supporting a variety of Adult and Pediatric patient care units across the downtown campus. In this role, you'll provide continuous one-on-one observation for patients who require close monitoring to ensure their safety, comfort, and well-being while working alongside an interdisciplinary healthcare team. Our team offers flexible scheduling, exposure to diverse clinical environments, and additional float differential pay.The Patient Safety Companion reports to the Staffing Office and Hospital Supervisors to obtain unit assignments. Under general supervision of the Registered Nurse, the Patient Safety Companion monitors the patient closely at all times and never leaves the patient alone to ensure patient safety. This role assists patients with activities of daily living and performs other general patient care duties as directed by the Registered Nurse. The Patient Safety Companion notifies the Registered Nurse immediately of any patient concerns. When not functioning as a Patient Safety Companion, this role provides clerical support for the nurse's station as assigned.Minimum Training and Education:Patient Safety Companion I: High School Diploma or equivalent required.Patient Safety Companion II: High School Diploma/Equivalent and ONE of the following requirements must be met.Associate or Bachelor's degree1 year of experience in behavioral health facilityAt least 1 year of PSC I (.6 FTE +) experience at MUSCActive enrollment in a healthcare related field from an accredited institutionCertified Nursing Assistant or Certified Medical Assistant Certification from an accredited institutionRequired Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Basic Life Support required within 4 weeks of hire. Thereafter, must maintain Current Basic Life Support (BLS), either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.Physical Requirements: Ability to perform job functions while standing. Ability to perform job functions while sitting. Ability to perform job functions while walking. Ability to climb stairs. Ability to work indoors. Ability to work outside in temperature extremes. Ability to work from elevated areas. Ability to work in confined/cramped spaces. Ability to perform "pinching" operations. Ability to perform gross motor activities with fingers and hands. Ability to perform fine manipulation with fingers and hands. Ability to reach overhead. Ability to perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders. Ability to fully use both legs. Ability to use lower extremities for balance and coordination. Ability to reach in all directions. Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. unassisted. Ability to lift/lower objects 50 lbs. from/to floor from/to 36 inches unassisted. Ability to lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. Ability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force. Examples include: To transfer a 100 lb. patient that cannot assist in the transfer requires 50 lbs. of force. For every 100 additional pounds, assistance will be required from another healthcare worker. 20 lbs. of force is needed to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet. 25 lbs. of force is required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand. Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes. Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance. Ability to match or discriminate between colors. Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception. Good peripheral vision capabilities. Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction. Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements. Ability to deal effectively with stressful situations. Ability to work rotating shifts. Ability to work overtime as required. Ability to work in a latex safe environment. Ability to maintain tactile sensory functions. Ability to maintain good olfactory sensory function.
