Job description
General Purpose:
nResponsible for the accurate and timely processing of payroll while maintaining the accounting, compliance, reporting, and reconciliation activities associated with payroll operations. This position serves as a subject matter expert for payroll accounting and collaborates closely with Operations, Human Resources, and the Finance Team to ensure payroll-related transactions are properly recorded, reconciled, and compliant with all federal, state, local, union, and company requirements.
nThe Payroll Accountant is expected to identify and resolve root causes of payroll issues, strengthen internal controls, support audits, and drive process improvements across payroll and workforce-related accounting functions. nEssential Duties and Responsibilities:
nPayroll Administration
nnProcess weekly payroll for union and non-union employee groups.
nReview employee time entries, pay rates, deductions, and earnings for accuracy.
nProcess payroll adjustments, retroactive payments, corrections, and terminations.
nMaintain payroll records and supporting documentation.
nAdminister garnishments, child support orders, tax levies, and other employee deductions.
nEnsure compliance with wage and hour laws, collective bargaining agreements, and company policies.
n nPayroll Accounting & Financial Reporting
nnReconcile payroll-related general ledger accounts including:
nnPayroll clearing accounts
nWage accruals
nPayroll tax liabilities
nBenefit liabilities
nUnion fringe benefit liabilities
nPTO and accrued compensation accounts
n nAnalyze payroll variances and investigate discrepancies.
nAssist with monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities.
nPrepare payroll-related schedules for financial reporting and audit support.
nMaintain payroll burden calculations and labor allocation methodologies.
n nTax, Compliance, and Regulatory Reporting
nnPrepare and remit payroll tax payments.
nPrepare quarterly and annual payroll tax filings.
nCoordinate W-2 processing and year-end payroll activities.
nManage unemployment compensation filings and notices.
nPrepare union reports and fringe benefit submissions.
nCoordinate certified payroll reporting and prevailing wage compliance requirements.
nAssist with responses to tax notices, government inquiries, and payroll audits.
n nSystems, Controls, and Process Improvement
nnMaintain payroll procedures and desktop documentation.
nIdentify payroll processing issues and determine root causes.
nRecommend and implement process improvements and internal controls.
nSupport payroll system testing, upgrades, and implementations.
nAssist with maintaining union rate tables, payroll deductions, tax tables, and employee master data.
nEnsure compliance with company policies and segregation of duty requirements.
n nEmployee & Management Support
nnServe as a resource for employee payroll inquiries.
nSupport Operations with labor reporting and job cost inquiries.
nAssist Human Resources with employee onboarding and payroll-related changes.
nPartner with management to resolve payroll compliance and reporting issues.
n nQualifications:
nnBachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business preferred.
n1-3 years of payroll experience required.
nConstruction industry experience required.
nUnion payroll experience required.
nCertified payroll and prevailing wage experience preferred.
nMulti-state payroll experience preferred.
nExperience with Vista by Viewpoint or similar ERP systems preferred.
nStrong communication and customer service skills.
nAdvanced Microsoft Excel skills.
nStrong understanding of payroll taxes and regulatory compliance.
nFamiliarity with union payroll, fringe benefits, and prevailing wage requirements.

For the most part, ambient room temperatures, lighting and traditional office equipment as found in typical office environment. Moderate noise level.
