Who We Are
The Borough of Tenafly (Bergen County) is seeking a qualified and experienced full-time Payroll/Confidential Executive Assistant, reporting directly to the Borough Administrator. The Borough has a population of 15.5 thousand residents, and an operating budget of $38 million, with payroll for about 165 employees, including FT, PT, and Seasonal. The Borough has a bi-monthly payroll - the 15th of each month and the last day of each month. The Borough has moved to automating portions of payroll through the iSolved software application, with the goal of integrating the Police Department's system, and employee self-service.
What You’ll Do
As Payroll/Confidential Executive Assistant, you’ll help keep the Borough’s bi-monthly payroll accurate, timely, and handled with care and discretion. You’ll prepare payroll in iSolved; process pension contributions (NJ PFRS, PERS, DCRP); manage health insurance, pre-tax, and deferred compensation deductions (including 457B transmittals); and complete longevity and other calculations required by Borough policy and collective bargaining agreements, as approved by the Borough Administrator. You’ll also support confidential payroll, budget, and related administrative work as assigned.
What you’ll bring:
- Payroll experience (municipal experience and iSolved are welcome, not required)
- Familiarity with pensions/deductions (PFRS/PERS/DCRP, pre-tax, 457B) preferred
- Strong Microsoft Office skills, communication, organization, and attention to detail
- An associate’s or bachelor’s in accounting/finance (or similar) is a plus

Your Typical Day
You’ll start your morning onsite at Borough Hall, reviewing updates and priorities with the Borough Administrator and checking for timekeeping changes or employee questions that need a quick, respectful response. As payroll dates approach (the 15th and month-end), you’ll move through focused check-and-verify work, then document what’s been completed so the process stays clear and auditable. Between cycles, you’ll help keep confidential records organized, follow up on routine items, and support ongoing improvements as payroll automation expands in iSolved. You’ll wrap up the day with a tidy status log and a plan for what’s next, so the next payroll run feels steady and predictable.
