Job description

Permit TechnicianThe Permit Technician is a full-time position under the direction of the Permits Manager and Assistant Director in the Planning & Community Development department. The primary duties of this position will be processing building permit applications, scheduling inspections, answering questions regarding the permit and inspections processes and procedures.Major DutiesServes as an initial point of contact for the Planning and Building Department to include walk-in and phone customersAnswer general questions regarding services, permitting, processes and procedures provided by the Planning and Building DepartmentProcess and schedules inspection requests and coordinates with Building OfficialProcesses permit applications for commercial and residential buildings, signs temporary use, and other projects in the City of East PointReview and process permit applications, documents and associated feesInput data into City computer softwarePerforms a variety of daily clerical and administrative duties, including but not limited to, answering and directing incoming calls, operating computer software, data entry, creating and managing records, facilitating letters and other documents and correspondence as requiredMaintains department archives and records including filing, storage, and destructionProcess all permits after the completion of plan review by Building OfficialRepresents the City and department by performing a wide variety of functions at meetings, occasions, and eventsPerforms other duties as assignedReview and process construction and development permit applicationsProvide information to the public regarding permits, regulations, and proceduresMaintain and manage permit documentation and recordsCoordinate with other departments and agencies to ensure code compliancePerform field inspections to verify compliance with permits and regulationsManage permitting databases and tracking systemsPrepare reports and correspondence related to permit activitiesAssist in the enforcement of code violationsMinimum QualificationsHigh school diploma or equivalent2+ years of municipal experience required2+ years professional experience in permit issuanceEquivalent combination of education and experience acceptedKnowledge Required by the PositionKnowledge of permits, licensing and plan review requirements, ordinance, guidelines SOP, laws, etc.Some knowledge of construction methods and materials, engineering principles and practices and building safety standardsSome knowledge of local ordinances pertaining to planning and zoningKnowledge of office procedures, standard protocols and practices, including business correspondence, filing techniquesKnowledge of building trades, Certificate of Occupancy and Occupational Tax licensing and permitting guidelinesAttend professional development training to maintain needed skill sets to enhance and support innovative service delivery practicesWorking knowledge at an advance level of computer software applications and database management including Access, Word, Excel and Power Point and GISSkill in communicating concise and clearly verbal and in written formAbility to explain complex issues, rules and regulationsManagement skills and ability to train subordinate division staff membersAbility to prepare and present a variety of reports to various entitiesAbility to work independently and in a team setting to meet deadlinesAbility to communicate development permit business licensing and plan review requirements to contractor and the public in a professional, articulate and courteous mannerAbility to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with builders, contractors and the public and City officials, staff and city employeesBenefitsPaid HolidaysVacation LeaveSick Leave457b Supplemental Retirement (Deferred Compensation Plan)Long and Short-Term DisabilityDirect DepositEmployee Assistance ProgramLife InsurancePension PlanMedicalDentalVisionFlexible Spending AccountDependent Care - Flexible Spending Account
