Phlebotomist /Associate - Part Time

Phlebotomist/Associate II collects blood from patients following established standards and practices to assure specimen quality while maintaining the safety and comfort of the patient. Phlebotomists/Associate II will receive and track specimens in the laboratory information system. Specimen handling, centrifugation, delivering to appropriate department and packaging of reference tests will be performed by the Phlebotomy/Associate II staff.

Job duties and essential functions include: following AIDET protocol consistently including explanation of procedures performed to patient, practicing hand hygiene, using appropriate personal protective equipment, assuring proper patient identification prior to the performance of any procedure, performing venipuncture and finger/heelstick to obtain blood specimens using appropriate aseptic technique to maintain specimen integrity, maintaining safety and comfort of the patient, proper care of phlebotomy site, coordinating specimen collection for special studies, performing waived testing such as fingerstick PT and/or glucose/cholesterol, accurately labeling specimens, receiving and tracking specimens into the laboratory information system, disposing sharps and medical waste in accordance with hospital policy, organizing, stocking, maintaining phlebotomy trays in a sanitary condition, maintaining supplies for phlebotomy; assisting technologists in maintaining the general supply storage area, maintaining regulatory documentation including temperature, inventory control and lot numbers, clarifying orders with physicians' offices, arranging patient redraw if necessary, receiving specimens from patients, OR, ER and physician offices; labeling and tracking laboratory specimens as required, verifying the complete accuracy of test orders from test requisition, preparing specimens correctly for sending out to reference laboratories including knowledge of manifests and tracking procedures, packaging "pass-through" specimens to Quest or LabCorp, correctly documenting all information on specimens received, specimens sent out and transportation temperature on test requisition, distributing specimens to the correct laboratory department, promptly following up on all problems in problem folder by investigating issue and calling physician offices/patients as necessary, supporting and helping co-workers, following all hospital policies including safety, patient confidentiality, compliance, dress code, etc., answering laboratory telephones using proper phone etiquette and customer service script, answering questions regarding laboratory test results, specimen requirements, reference tests and other miscellaneous questions, handling customer service complaints and forwarding to appropriate parties for resolution, investigating and following up on problems, dispatching phlebotomists and laboratory couriers, maintaining courier dispatch log, providing customer service for the outpatient area, greeting outpatients and processing paperwork, registering patients in the hospital information system by attaining patients' demographic and insurance information for billing purposes, entering patient test orders including clarification with patient's physician of all unclear patient test orders into the hospital/laboratory information system, performing other duties as directed by the Laboratory Administration or Supervisors.

Required experience and qualifications include: high school diploma or equivalent, current phlebotomy certification or medical assistant or patient care technician certification required upon hire, completion of phlebotomy courses and/or previous phlebotomy experience, ability to travel offsite, basic office skills and computer keyboarding skills, organizational skills, medical terminology and ICD-10 coding knowledge, excellent customer service, communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred experience and qualifications include: one (1) year of phlebotomy experience.

Anticipated pay range: the starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established based on relevant experience. The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBSH's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. Your total compensation goes beyond the number in your paycheck! Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements: successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Southampton Hospital's Employee Health Services, complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references, successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen, meet regulatory requirements for pre-employment screenings, provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s). Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer. The hiring department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.
