Job description

Are you ready to be professionally challenged? Are you looking to be part of a dynamic team of engaged and committed professionals? Then the Health and Specialty Care System (HSCS) may be just the place for you! The HSCS is comprised of nine psychiatric hospitals located throughout the state, and one youth residential psychiatric center in Waco. The HSCS is a hub of excellence for forensic mental health and complex psychiatric care, with all facilities accredited by The Joint Commission. The hospitals provide state-of-the-art treatment that is recovery-oriented and science-based. Whether in a direct-care or support role, your contribution will make a difference in the life of a Texan. Austin State Hospital is at the forefront of person-centered, trauma-informed, recovery-oriented care and seeks a dynamic psychiatrist to work with medically and behaviorally complex individuals. Our staff contribute to a work culture of collegiality and respect with goals of continuous quality improvement. Demands are high, as are the rewards. Supports include a strong nursing staff, an excellent pharmacy department and an on-site medical clinic. This position primarily focuses on an Inpatient Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist Specialty Unit (CAPS) at Austin State Hospital (ASH) which predominantly admits acute child and adolescent patients with serious mental illness. With possible co-occurring disorders (substance abuse, intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, and medical illness), and possible involvements in child protective services and the juvenile justice system. The psychiatrist will provide both leadership and support to recovery team members and to facility clinical functions. As such, an ability to work with all disciplines, from direct care staff to consulting physicians, is essential for the provision of optimal care plans with the ultimate goal of partnering with our regional associates to integrate our clients back in to the community. In addition to general psychiatric evaluation and treatment, specific duties include evaluation of commitment needs, testifying in court hearings, supervision of nurse practitioners, supervision of psychiatric residents, participation in clinical and system committees. Up-to-date psychopharmacology knowledge, electronic health record usage and general computer skills are key requirements. The state of Texas offers many benefits to physician employees, including competitive salaries, educational loan repayment, career advancement, defined benefit pension plan, access to CME, health and dental insurance, and paid vacation and sick leave.
