Job description

Police Cadet PositionInterested in pursuing a career in law enforcement but lack the required training to become a sworn officer? Join the City of Brevard Police Department as a Police Cadet while attending the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Program. City of Brevard Police Cadets will receive tuition, fees, uniforms, and necessary academy equipment, along with a cadet salary and full-time employee benefits. The next class starts in January 2027.The BLET Program is designed to equip you with the essential skills needed for entry-level law enforcement positions with state, county, municipal governments, or private enterprises. This certification is a prerequisite to becoming a sworn officer in North Carolina and successful graduates are qualified to take the state certification examination.BLET covers 36 instruction blocks, including firearms, driver training, motor vehicle law, and arrest, search, and seizure. The course includes practical exercises and an extensive ethics section integrated throughout the training experience.Upon successful completion of the BLET certification course, individuals will be promoted to a role as a sworn police officer for the City of Brevard. Failure to graduate from BLET within the prescribed training period may result in termination. Applicants who are selected and hired through this program must commit to a two-year service agreement with the Brevard Police Department.Examples of DutiesAttends and successfully completes Basic Law Enforcement Training (B.L.E.T); obtains a probationary law enforcement certificate.Participates in educational training and successfully passes tests, no deficiencies.Performs assigned tasks as instructed.Participates in role playing scenarios during class.Gains knowledge in the investigation of crimes and accidents.Gains knowledge in preparing accurate and thorough incident, accident, and arrest reports,Gains knowledge in developing skills needed to prepare cases and testify in court.Assists with other assigned duties and activities such as special events and administrative duties outside of the classroom instruction and training.Performs other related duties as required.QualificationsGraduation from high school or GED.Must possess or be able to obtain a valid North Carolina Driver's License and complete all required physical and educational requirements of the North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Curriculum.Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the North Carolina Training and Standards Commission.Must be at least Twenty years old by the time of taking the state exam.Not have committed or been convicted of:A felony; orA crime for which the punishment could have been imprisonment for more than two years; orA crime or unlawful act defined as a "Class B misdemeanor" within the five-year period prior to the date of application for employment; orFour or more crimes or unlawful acts defined as "Class B misdemeanors" regardless of the date of conviction; orFour or more crimes or unlawful acts defined as "Class A misdemeanors" except the applicant may be employed if the last conviction occurred more than two years prior to the date of application for employment.Satisfactorily pass background investigation, psychological evaluation, and drug screen.This position is considered to be safety-sensitive and is subject to random drug testing.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesSome knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, practices and procedures.Some knowledge of departmental standard operating policies, procedures and federal, state and local laws and ordinance.Some knowledge of practices, materials, techniques and equipment pertinent to job assignment.Ability to learn, understand, and apply applicable laws, ordinances, policies, and procedures.Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, and the public.Ability to work under strict law enforcement structure.Strong communication skills and the ability to express thoughts effectively orally and in written reports.Ability to read and write at the level required for successful job performance.Ability to interact with the public with courtesy and tact.Skill in analyzing situations accurately and select quick, effective, and responsible courses of action.Ability to learn standard broadcasting procedures of a police radio system.Basic computer skills and the ability to learn applicable software.Ability to use firearms and other authorized law enforcement equipment.Ability and willingness to act quickly and properly in emergency situations.BenefitsWe are proud to offer a competitive and comprehensive benefits package designed to support the health, financial security, and well-being of our employees and their families.
