Police CadetJOBTITLE: Police CadetDATEREVISED: May 19, 2023REPORTSTO: Chief of PoliceDEPARTMENT/CAMPUS: Police ServicesFLSA: Non-ExemptPAYGRADE/DUTYDAYS: PS3, 260Job Purpose SummaryThis position is responsible for participating in classroom lectures, seminars, and practical training sessions to prepare for and to complete the Basic Peace Officer Certification at an approved State-supported institution.Key Functions, Essential Duties, and ResponsibilitiesLaw Enforcement Training1. Participates in on-the-job training and orientation in the methods and techniques associated with law enforcement within a public school district setting to include, without limitation, police methods and procedures, patrol, crime prevention, traffic control, investigation, and identification techniques.2. Participates in different training programs including, without limitation, firearms training, defensive tactics training, and practical problem solving.3. Completes special tasks and projects, as assigned, and in accordance with applicable requirements, standards, and practices.Compliance4. Performs all assigned work activities in accordance with applicable standards, procedures, policies, and protocols set forth by the department, District, and in accordance with requirements and standards as set forth by governing bodies and guidelines including, without limitation, the Texas Commission of Law Enforcement and Education Standards, Texas Penal Code, Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, Texas Transportation Code, United States Constitution, other applicable local, state, and federal regulations, as well as Texas State Board of Education, Texas Education Agency, and Texas Administrative Code, and School-Based Law Enforcement (SBLE) standards and related requirements.5. Demonstrates progressed proficiency, understanding, and working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations and ordinances.6. Demonstrates progressed proficiency, understanding, and working knowledge of standard concepts, terms, practices, and procedures within the law enforcement management/school safety field.7. Demonstrates progressed proficiency, understanding, and working knowledge of Board of Trustee policy and District regulations/procedures.8. Maintains relevant and up-to-date knowledge and understanding of standard practices set forth by the Texas Commission of Law Enforcement and Education Standards.9. Monitors respective work activity for variances and anomalies.10. Identifies and timely reports any known or suspected compliance issues to appropriate personnel.11. Assists with audits and the preparation for audits, whether initiated internally or externally, as assigned.12. Adheres to all other Districtwide policies and procedures including, but not limited to, human resources, safety, and emergency protocols.General13. Consistently demonstrates support towards the District's Shared Vision, Mission, and Promise Purpose.14. Assists department leadership in the compilation of miscellaneous confidential reports.15. Attends departmental and District meetings, as required.16. Consistently displays integrity, responsibility, accountability, teamwork, and ethics.17. Performs assigned job duties and responsibilities in accordance with established performance expectations, as well as with District policies, procedures, protocols, and standard practices.18. Maintains relevant and up-to-date job knowledge by participating in continuous education initiatives.19. Demonstrates proficient working knowledge and understanding of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook, Google Shared applications to include Google Sheets, Google Docs, and Google Slides, as well as database systems and applications relevant to the job function.20. Performs other duties as assigned.Minimum Education, Experience & Credential RequirementsMinimum requirements for enrollment and licensure set forth by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE), which include:1. Minimum Age Requirement(A) At least twenty-one years of age by the date of commission and not more than 45 years of age at the time of hire.2. Minimum Education Requirement(A) has passed a general educational development (GED) test indicating high school graduation level;(B) holds a high school diploma; or (C) for enrollment purposes in a basic peace officer academy only, has an honorable discharge from the armed forces of the United States after at least 24 months of active-duty service.3. is fingerprinted and is subjected to a search of local, state and U.S. national records and fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record;4. has never been on court-ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years from the date of the court order;5. is not currently charged with any criminal offense for which conviction would be a bar to licensure;6. has never been convicted of an offense above the grade of a Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years;7. has never been convicted or placed on community supervision in any court of an offense involving family violence as defined under Chapter 71, Texas Family Code;8. is not prohibited by state or federal law from operating a motor vehicle;9. is not prohibited by state or federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition;10. has been subjected to a background investigation completed by the enrolling or appointing entity into the applicant's personal history with the results of such background investigation meeting all requirements set forth by TCOLE.Core Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesEthics and Values – Adheres to an appropriate (for the setting) and effective set of core values and beliefs during situations that are both peaceful and difficult and acts in line with those values.Judgment – Exercises critical thinking, analysis, and assessment of implications, identification of patterns, making connections of underlying issues and causes, and demonstrates ownership of the outcome.Aptitude – Demonstrates strong ability to learn and perform new concepts and information within the context of law enforcement in a public-school setting.Organization - Uses resources effectively and efficiently, arranges information and data in a useful manner, assembles and orchestrates resources to meet departmental deadlines.Physical Requirements & Working ConditionsEnvironmental ConditionsPrimarily an outdoor non-climate controlled setting with frequent local travel by automobile to various locations, as assigned, and frequent exposure to emergency public safety environment, emergency and disaster situations; exposure to potentially hostile environments; exposure to dangerous and/or hostile people; animal and human body fluids; hazards of emergency driving; hazards associated with traffic control and working in and near traffic; working in and near natural and man-made disasters, exposure to inclement weather conditions; may be required to work in and around heavy vehicles and equipment; possible exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes and gases when assisting in emergency calls; possible exposure to hazardous chemicals, high voltage and toxic materials; exposure to waste and infectious diseases; frequent contact with the public.Physical DemandsEssential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, or walking for prolonged periods of time; adequate speech, hearing, visual acuity, and ability to distinguish color; may be required to carry, push, pull, drag or hold medium to heavy weight objects.
