Job description

Primary Care Physician – Peaks Island Clinic

MaineHealth Family Medicine is seeking a Board Certified/Board Eligible Family Medicine Physician to join our Peaks Island Clinic, a unique and rewarding practice serving one of Maine's most vibrant island communities. This is an extraordinary opportunity to practice relationship-centered medicine in one of Maine's most distinctive coastal communities. This.9 FTE position offers the chance to care for a close-knit patient population while enjoying a highly autonomous practice, strong community connections, and the support of Maine's largest integrated health system.

Located just a short ferry ride from Portland, Peaks Island is home to approximately 800 year-round residents and a thriving seasonal community. The clinic serves as a critical healthcare resource for island residents, many of whom face transportation barriers and rely heavily on local primary care services. As the community continues to age and patient complexity increases, we are seeking a physician who values continuity, community-based care, and the opportunity to make a lasting impact.

Position Highlights

The position includes clinical time at the Peaks Island clinic, with once weekly clinical time at the Portland Family Medicine Clinic

Outpatient-only practice with no inpatient responsibilities

Manage a well-established patient panel with opportunities for growth

Provide comprehensive care across the lifespan, including preventive care, chronic disease management, and coordination of specialty services

Work within an integrated MaineHealth primary care network with access to specialty consultation and system resources

Build long-term relationships with patients in a highly connected community setting

Academic and Teaching Opportunities

As part of MaineHealth Family Medicine, this position offers the opportunity to participate in the education of Family Medicine residents and medical students. The Peaks Island clinic provides a distinctive rural and community-based training environment where learners can experience continuity-focused primary care and gain exposure to the unique challenges and rewards of practicing in an island community.

Teaching opportunities may include:

Precepting Family Medicine residents

Mentoring medical students

Participating in MaineHealth's academic and educational initiatives

Contributing to the development of innovative rural and community-based training experiences

The Ideal Candidate

We are seeking a physician who:

Is Board Certified or Board Eligible in Family Medicine

Enjoys practicing full-spectrum outpatient primary care

Values continuity and relationship-centered medicine

Is comfortable managing complex chronic disease and caring for an aging population

Has an interest in teaching and mentoring learners

Appreciates the unique rewards of serving a rural and geographically isolated community

Why Peaks Island?

This position offers a rare opportunity to practice medicine in a setting where primary care truly makes a difference. The island's geographic isolation creates a strong reliance on local healthcare services, allowing physicians to provide comprehensive, meaningful care while developing deep connections with patients and families.

Residents benefit from having a trusted physician close to home, reducing the burden of travel to the mainland for routine and chronic care needs. In return, physicians enjoy a highly rewarding practice environment, strong community relationships, and a pace of practice that emphasizes quality, continuity, and patient-centered care.

MaineHealth is a not-for-profit integrated health system whose vision is, "Working together so our communities are the healthiest in America." MaineHealth consists of nine local health systems, a comprehensive behavioral health care network, diagnostic services, home health agencies, and 1,700 employed clinicians working together through the MaineHealth Medical Group. With approximately 22,000 care team members, MaineHealth provides preventive care, diagnosis and treatment to 1.1 million residents in Maine and New Hampshire. MaineHealth offers a Total Rewards package that includes comprehensive and competitive benefits, along with programs and resources to meet the diverse needs of our workforce.
