Job description
Berkshire Hathaway companies power some of the most critical systems in North America—spanning transportation, energy, logistics, manufacturing, retail, and infrastructure. At BRK Tech, we partner across these businesses to design, build, and operate modern technology platforms that run at massive scale and support long‑term, real‑world impact.
We are hiring for remote (US only) Principal Messaging Platform Engineers for a Berkshire Portfolio company to work in our Infra and Ops org.
Here you would build a greenfield, open‑source enterprise messaging and integration platform that is mission‑critical to energy generation, transmission, and power grid operations. This messaging layer is the glue that ties together all services and applications—connecting databases, internal systems, field operations, and external vendors via real‑time and batch integrations.
The platform cannot operate without this role. You will design, build, scale, and operate the enterprise messaging bus, supporting Kafka across multiple data centers, consolidating and uplifting messaging capabilities across 11 data centers, and enabling systems that have never previously communicated to work together reliably.
Responsibilities
Architect and build an enterprise messaging bus for real‑time and batch integrations
Design and operate Kafka and/or RabbitMQ at enterprise scale (multi‑DC)
Own topic/queue design, message flows, durability, scaling, and reliability
Enable integrations via messaging, APIs, service mesh, and event‑driven patterns
Support vendor‑facing and internal integrations (batch, streaming, real‑time)
Drive messaging consolidation and modernization across data centers
Implement open‑source observability and operational best practices
Required Skills & Experience
10+ years of relevant experience with Cloud, Platform, SRE, or DevOps engineering and must have experience building messaging platforms (not just used them).
Hands‑on experience building, scaling, configuring and operating Kafka and/or RabbitMQ platforms or similar
Enterprise messaging architecture: topic/queue design, flow patterns, scaling, HA
Experience with event‑driven and integration‑heavy environments
Strong background in Cloud, SRE, Platform, or DevOps engineering
Kubernetes and containerized services (on‑prem and/or cloud)
API‑based integrations and distributed systems fundamentals
Production ownership mindset for mission‑critical systems
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience
Preferred Skills & Technologies

Kafka (multi‑DC), RabbitMQ, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Hubs
Event‑driven / reactive systems (Kafka, Azure Event Grid)
Platform & Infrastructure
Azure PaaS (API Management, Front Door, App Gateway, Container Apps), Service Mesh (Istio ), Temporal (code‑first workflows) or Azure Logic Apps
