Job description
The Potency Scientist will develop the functional assays that measure the biological activity of Oryon's autologous iPSC-derived dopaminergic neuron therapy. Reporting to the Chief Technical Officer, this individual will help establish a rigorous and biologically meaningful framework for evaluating product function and work with Analytical Development to translate that framework into a robust characterization platform.
The work will span key aspects of dopaminergic neuron biology, including neuronal differentiation and maturation, dopaminergic function, and broader measures of cellular activity and fitness. The scientist will develop and evaluate fit-for-purpose functional methods and help determine which measurements are most informative for understanding product quality and performance. This individual will work closely with Analytical Development, Process Development, and our academic collaborators. Industry experience is not required; strong academic researchers are encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities
Design and develop quantitative functional assays for human iPSC-derived dopaminergic neurons
Establish measures of neuronal function, including dopamine synthesis and release, electrophysiological activity, and maturation state
Define the link between the product's mechanism of action and measurable product attributes
Build assay controls, reference materials, and data analysis methods that support reproducible, quantitative results
Develop candidate potency methods through qualification, in collaboration with Analytical Development
Characterize product across patients, lots, and process changes, and contribute to comparability studies
Identify and evaluate emerging technologies for functional characterization of neural cells
Support authoring of protocols, technical reports, and potency content for regulatory submissions
Assist with laboratory build-out and support establishment of laboratory systems and workflows
Qualifications
Required
PhD in neuroscience, stem cell biology, cell biology, or related field
5+ years of relevant research experience in academia or industry, including postdoctoral work
Demonstrated rigor in assay design: controls, reproducibility, and statistical analysis
Strong publication record or equivalent evidence of independent scientific work
Strong data analysis and technical writing skills
Hands-on experience with human pluripotent stem cell-derived or primary neurons, with depth in at least two of the following:
Neurotransmitter release and detection (HPLC, ELISA, or sensor-based)
Electrophysiology, including multi-electrode array or patch clamp
Calcium imaging or other live-cell functional readouts
High-content imaging and quantitative image analysis
Directed differentiation of pluripotent stem cells to neural lineages
Modeling of neural cell engraftment and function
Single-cell or molecular characterization of neural populations
Preferred
Parkinson's disease models or cell replacement research
Experience developing an assay for use in a regulated or manufacturing setting
Experience working with cell therapy analytical or QC groups
