Storion is a battery component manufacturer specializing in vanadium electrolyte production and assembly of stack-power assemblies that serve the flow battery industry in the US. We strive to drive flow battery adoption through cost-effective, readily available electrochemistry components required in large-scale flow batteries.

Reporting through the Process Controls Engineering team, you will directly affect the direction and development of our operations base. You will work with other chemical, electrical, and mechanical engineers as we bring a novel production process from lab scale to full operations and help lead the future expansion of deployed manufacturing sites. We expect a blend of traditional controls technology and hardware with the capabilities of higher-level programming languages.

Responsibilities

The Process Controls Engineer will be the go-to person for control system scale-up and new applications, including design, integration, commissioning, and ongoing support.

This role’s primary responsibility is supporting the product engineering team's R&D efforts in Boston. The role will also support pilot production projects at our corporate headquarters in Atlanta, GA and capital expansion projects in future production plants, both remotely and on-site, when needed.

Take ownership of all automation aspects for our equipment: from instrumentation and electrical to automation, HMI, & SCADA.

Support Product Engineering projects from scoping through implementation.

Support Product Engineers in implementing new tests with software and hardware solutions.

Work on equipment and processes at all stages of development: lab-, bench-, pilot-, and production-scale.

Work with vendors to support design and implementation of control system hardware and software.

Take a hands-on approach to integration of in-house developed and vendor-created systems, including panel modifications/builds and field integrations.

In-house development of higher-level automation and process controls in PLC systems, including PID controls and sequence automation.

Set up and support network communication between PLCs and other systems.

Design, implement, & Deploy HMI / SCADA systems for collection of process data.

Own and implement changes to equipment HMI screens, data reporting, and internal perspective projects.

Foster strong relationships with members of the product engineering team, operations team, and vendors

Align with team members onsite and throughout the organization through communication, documentation, and training of others.

Grow technology expertise in Automation, MES, Industry 4.0, and IIoT

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineer, or related field.

Minimum of 3 years of hands-on automation experience in a manufacturing or process development environment

Experience working with Control System hardware and software is required, DCS or PLC Systems (Siemens is preferred)

Note: Distributive Control System (DCS) experience is an acceptable analog to Programmable Logic Control System (PLC) experience.

Programming skills in ladder logic and structured text programming languages is required

Knowledge and Experience with HMI Development is required (Inductive Automation’s Ignition perspective preferred)

Knowledge and Experience with SCADA Development is required (Inductive Automation’s Ignition preferred)

Understanding of network communication protocols such as EthernetIP, Profinet, and Modbus is required

Capability to work with scripted programming is required (Python is preferred)

Experience in panel building and field wiring is beneficial; willingness to learn is required

Familiarity with instrumentation and devices used in chemical manufacturing is beneficial

Familiarity with instrumentation and robotic control for discrete assembly processes is beneficial

About the work environment

You must be able to see, hear, and speak; able to sit and stand for at least two hours at a time; sit, bend, crawl, squat, kneel, and climb; able to use both arms and hands to use a computer and peripherals; lift 40 pounds from floor level; able to climb stairs and work in confined spaces or elevated platforms; able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

Occasional travel may be required for this position, but not more than 20%
