PUBLIC ASSISTANCE SPECIALIST -

The Florida Department of Health (DOH) is responsible for the health and safety of all citizens and visitors to the state. As a public health agency, the Florida Department of Health must monitor the health status of Floridians, diagnose, investigate health problems, and mobilize local communities to address health-related issues. The Florida Department of Health develops policies and plans that support health goals, enforce laws and regulations that protect the health of all residents and visitors, and link people to health care services. The Florida Department of Health also provides specialized assistance to pregnant women, infants, and children with special health care needs, regulates health care practitioners, and provides medical disability determinations.

Public Assistance Specialist: Provide support to the front desk, when necessary, by registering clients, completing necessary forms, ensuring accurate and up-to-date: demographic, insurance and financial (income verification via WAGES/AWI) data is entered into HMS. Inform patients of public assistance benefits available and the potential benefits for which they may be eligible. Provides patients with information concerning other departments and community assistance programs as appropriate. Access to Florida Medicaid System (FLMMIS) for Insurance coverage to verify patient's coverage for visit or arrange for payment.

Your Specific Responsibilities: Responsible for ensuring accurate and up-to-date data for demographic, insurance and financial information Interact with patients from different cultures, backgrounds and languages Review and send billing forms to the Business Center within the required timeframe Collects fees, produces payments, receipts and financial reports Process health insurance authorizations Assist with maintaining office inventory Preform duties as back up C-Team member for program

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Effective verbal and communication skills Multitask and problem-solving skills Excellent time management skills Ability to use computer, fax machine, copier and telephone Knowledge of Excel, Word and Outlook

Qualifications: Minimum: At least 1 year of customer service experience in a fast-paced environment At least 1 year of experience in data entry At least 1 year of experience in an office/clinic environment providing office administrative support (e.g., client registration, answering phones, data entry) Six months of experience in cash transactions Preferred: Bilingual (fluent reading, writing and speaking) in both English and Spanish
