Job description

Department Summary

The Department of Radiation Oncology at Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking a board-eligible or board-certified Radiation Oncologist with an interest in breast oncology management. The person hired into this position will serve as the primary radiation oncologist managing breast cancer at our Hanover Medical Park (HMP, located in Mechanicsville, Virginia) and Community Memorial Hospital (CMH, one day a week in South Hill, VA) community facilities, providing consultative and external beam radiotherapy treatment services. Our entire faculty practices as a collaborative, cohesive team regardless of patient management location.

While it will not be a central focus of this position, we welcome candidates who express an interest in conducting clinical research and enrolling patients into clinical trials and teaching residents, fellows, medical students, and other trainees who rotate through the department.

Duties & Responsibilities

Clinical/Service: Time and effort (98%) shall be devoted to the provision of clinical services, including the maintenance of a broad general radiation oncology practice and proficiency in external beam radiotherapy techniques and treatment services as a primary radiation oncologist at our Hanover Medical Park satellite facility and a supportive radiation oncologist at our Community Memorial Hospital satellite facility.

While the core responsibility will be breast oncology cases, the necessity to take responsibility for other types of cases may arise through rotations on the inpatient consultation service or coverage during the absence of other members of the department.

Students and residents will be involved in this service on an intermittent basis.

Additionally, active participation in the multidisciplinary tumor boards is expected.

Research: Although this position has no specific assigned research responsibilities, reasonable scholarly activities, such as publications, presentations at national meetings and participation in appropriate academic organizations, are expected. In the event that research funding is acquired, cFTE will be adjusted accordingly.

Administrative/Other: Time and effort (~2%) shall be devoted to departmental service-related activities. This may include departmental committee work, professional development or training, and other such assignments.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

MD or DO degree (or equivalent) completed via an ACGME-accredited program

Ability to provide excellent clinical care across a broad range of disease sites in a multi-disciplinary oncology setting

Demonstrated ability to build and sustain relationships in order to establish and maintain strong referral patterns

Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of patients, faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as an affiliate faculty member at VCU.

Established in 1987, VCUs Department of Radiation Oncology provides a full range of clinical services at the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center and its regional affiliated facilities. It is comprised of over 30 faculty in its three divisions, spanning five clinical locations and treating approximately 150 patients per day, with active, funded programs in clinical research, medical physics, and molecular radiobiology. Our team is an integral component of VCUs Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, one of only two National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in Virginia.

Our Radiation Oncology team is highly unified and collaborative, reflecting the discipline at large. Our faculty are committed to providing exceptional and compassionate patient-focused patient care, conducting cutting-edge research, and educating emerging attending providers, medical physicists, and dosimetrists to contribute to the ever-evolving field of Radiation Oncology.

Our clinical services currently include Varian True Beam LINAC with body stereotactic capabilities and CT simulators available at the HMP and CMH community facilities. Additionally, there is access to the full complement of technological offerings of our downtown location (Adult Outpatient Pavilion/AOP): ETHOS Helical LINAC (installation in progress), MR LINAC (ViewRay), Varian EDGE for stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic body radiotherapy, 3T MR simulator, and an image guided brachytherapy suite allowing adaptive treatment.

Richmond, Virginia is a midsized metropolitan city with historically distinguished architecture, world class museums, parks, and gardens, a thriving nationally recognized restaurant scene, and an expansive cultural arts community. The city is in close proximity to Washington, DC, the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, and scenic coastal/beach-front areas for endless adventuring and inspiration. Our South Hill satellite (located approximately 80 miles from our downtown facility in the southern Virginia region) supports our rural patient population, and our Hanover satellite (approximately 8 miles northeast of downtown) comprises both suburban and rural populations. Both are very accessible to all of the unique and enjoyable experiences to discover throughout RVA and beyond.
