Job description

Substitute CustodianRainier School District is seeking dependable, detail-oriented Substitute Custodians to join our Facilities team on an on-call basis. In this role, you will help maintain clean, safe, and welcoming learning environments for our students, staff, and community.As a substitute custodian, you step in to cover planned and short-notice absences. This position offers flexible scheduling and is ideal for individuals seeking intermittent work while supporting local public education.Key ResponsibilitiesFacility Maintenance & Sanitation: Clean and sanitize classrooms, offices, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, and common areas in accordance with health and safety standards.Event & Activity Setup: Set up and arrange furniture, equipment, and supplies for classes, athletic events, district meetings, and community functions.Building Security: Secure doors, windows, and perimeter gates at the end of shifts to protect district assets and ensure site safety.Shift Work Plan Execution: Follow daily shift instructions, work plans, and safety protocols thoroughly with minimal direct supervision.Supply & Inventory Control: Monitor cleaning supply levels and request restocks as needed to keep facilities properly equipped.Basic Maintenance: Perform light equipment care and minor furniture touch-ups or repairs as needed.Team & Staff Collaboration: Assist site staff, communicate effectively with building personnel, and report any safety hazards or maintenance needs to the Facilities Director.Preferred Skills & KnowledgeEquipment & Techniques: Experience using and caring for custodial power equipment (e.g., auto scrubbers, carpet extractors, blowers, and vacuums), along with basic floor care techniques (stripping, waxing, shampooing).Safe Work Practices: Familiarity with proper handling of cleaning chemicals, basic math for accurate chemical dilution, and general workplace safety standards.Adaptability & Communication: Ability to follow oral and written instructions, adapt quickly to short-notice assignments, and communicate positively with students, staff, and visitors.Physical DemandsAbility to stand and walk for prolonged periods.Capability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs.Ability to stoop, kneel, reach, bend, and safely work from ladders or personnel lifts.Adequate near/far visual acuity and depth perception to perform detailed cleaning and spot safety hazards.Qualifications & RequirementsEducation: High School diploma or equivalent.Experience: Prior custodial or facility maintenance experience in a school or institutional setting is preferred.Driver's License: Valid Driver's License required.Clearance: Successful completion of a Washington State Patrol and FBI Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance prior to employment.Mandatory Vector Solutions Training: All applicants are required to complete assigned online Vector Solutions compliance and safety courses (e.g., Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention, Hazard Communication) as a condition of employment prior to being placed on the active substitute list.Verification of identity and employment eligibility (Form I-9).Position is not eligible for benefits.Equal Opportunity EmployerRainier School District provides equal opportunity for all applicants and staff in recruitment, hiring, retention, assignment, transfer, promotion, and training.
