Job Summary

Location: Methodist Hospital, 8303 Dodge St., Omaha, NE.

Up to $15,000 sign-on bonus.

Work schedule: 6:45 pm - 7:15 am, 24 or 36 hours available, every third weekend.

The Med Surg Float Pool RN delivers quality patient care across medical-surgical units based on staffing and patient needs. This role floats to Surgical Short Stay, Oncology, ACE, Medical-Surgical, Medical Observation, Ortho-Neuro, Acute Rehabilitation, Intermediate Care and ICU units for appropriate patients. Candidates must have at least two years of RN experience and demonstrate strong clinical adaptability, teamwork, and the ability to provide compassionate, high-quality care in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

Provide appropriate care specific to the age of the patient, ensuring understanding and comfort with treatment. Demonstrate ability to provide individualized patient service according to needs.

Perform an initial and ongoing assessment. Include data from patient or significant others as appropriate.

Prioritize data collection according to immediate needs.

Use assessment findings in discharge planning.

Develop, review, and revise individualized plan of care. Collaborate with providers and other clinical disciplines.

Provide teaching specific to patient health issues.

Ensure care plan reflects continuing care needs and referrals for discharge/transfer.

Implement interventions consistent with the established plan of care. Follow nursing protocols and standards of care for the unit.

Use current knowledge and research literature to guide practice.

Evaluate patient care response. Monitor outcomes and document response to interventions.

Evaluate patient capabilities and/or limitations related to nursing and medical interventions.

Continually monitor the patient and/or significant others' ability to manage care after dismissal.

Provide complete verbal or written shift report including SBAR content.

Recognize and address patient and family capabilities and limitations.

Perform technical skills competently and independently. Competently perform technical skills independently.

Learn new skills and equipment within specified time frames.

Demonstrate correct and safe technique when using equipment.

Follow procedure for cleaning/disposing equipment and supplies.

Maintain professional behavior in attitude, demeanor, and interactions. Communicate effectively to solve problems.

Be approachable and professional with health professionals, ancillary staff, patients, and families.

Take pride in the unit by restocking and maintaining a clean environment.

Maintain a professional appearance, behavior, and work environment.

Maintain competence in the area of experience.

Participate in meetings and committees as needed.

Initiate action to correct, prevent, and minimize risk to patient, family, or employees. Complete appropriate report forms for any risk.

Communicate unresolved issues to appropriate personnel.

Work within the scope of practice as defined by the State Nurse Practice Act.

Observe precautions when administering hazardous medications or handling excreta from patients who received hazardous medications.

Review, delegate, and evaluate plans for appropriate utilization of staff. Determine right task, right person, right communication, and right feedback.

Demonstrate fiscal accountability. Act responsibly for human and other resources.

Charge accurately for the use of supplies and equipment.

Schedule

Full-time and part-time hours available. Shift: 6:45 pm - 7:15 am, with a third-weekend requirement.

Job Requirements

Education – BSN or MSN from an accredited nursing college required. If holding an ADN, must obtain a BSN within five years of hire.

Experience – Minimum two years of hospital nursing experience.

License & Certifications – Current valid Nebraska RN license, valid compact multistate license, or a temporary permit until licensure. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred and required within three months of hire; BLS required at hire. NIH Stroke Scale certification training required upon orientation.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities – Strong interpersonal communication; ability to multitask and prioritize; computer proficiency for hospital information systems; ability to work every third weekend.

Physical Requirements – Medium workload, exerting up to 50 pounds of force. Perform activities such as climbing, crawling, kneeling, sitting, balancing, carrying, crouching, distinguishing colors, keyboarding, lifting, pulling, pushing, repetitive motions, stooping, twisting, fingering, grasping, hearing, reaching, seeing, speaking, standing, walking.

Job Hazards – Not related: electrical shock/static. Rare (1-33%): radiation alpha, beta, gamma, non-ionizing (NICU only). Occasionally (34-66%): physical hazards (noise, temperature, lighting, wet floors, outdoors, sharps), equipment/machinery/tools, explosives, hazardous drugs. Frequent (67-100%): chemical agents (toxic, corrosive, flammable, latex), biological agents (air-borne and blood-borne viruses), mechanical moving parts/vibrations.
