Position Overview
5 West is a 26‑bed, newly renovated unit at Carilion Clinic that specializes in meeting the complex needs of medical and surgical patients. The population ranges from pneumonia and general medical conditions to minor surgical procedures and complex medical/psychiosocial needs. The unit focuses on IV drug–related infections requiring up to six weeks of care. Our multidisciplinary team includes licensed clinical social workers, peer recovery specialists, addiction physicians, psychiatric technicians, clinical nurse specialists, and others who are passionate about helping patients regain hope.
Responsibilities
Consistently deliver high quality nursing care and customer service while demonstrating respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy to patients, families, visitors, and colleagues.
Assume primary accountability for nursing coordination and individualized care for patients of all ages; utilize delegation and critical‑thinking skills in a team‑oriented, collaborative approach.
Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care to achieve optimum outcomes; complete age‑specific admission and ongoing assessments, then develop and revise interdisciplinary plans of care.
Accurately administer and document treatments and medications using electronic medical record (EPIC) systems.
Identify and incorporate patient/family educational needs into plans of care, implement, and document appropriately.
Contribute to performance‑improvement activities and advocate for patient rights, psychological, social, and cultural support.
Apply knowledge of growth and development for appropriate care, support evidence‑based practice, reduce length of stay, turnaround time, and resource consumption.
Maintain clinical expertise in rapidly changing circumstances; serve as a role model for clinical practice to coworkers, students, and physicians.
Manage resources, establish priorities, and modify the environment to meet patient care needs.
Complete director‑determined projects on time and within guidelines, using problem‑solving methods to facilitate resolution of patient and personnel situations.
Take an active role in orienting new employees and provide feedback using appropriate communication and documentation.
Participate in unit, hospital, and system activities to facilitate staff input in decision‑making; assist with education activities for the unit/department.
Qualifications
Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing school or approved program eligible to sit for the VA licensure exam.
Licensure/Certification: Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or eligible to obtain Virginia RN licensure.
Life Support: AHA BLS‑HCP required; may need BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP based on unit.
Computer Skills: Proficient with electronic medical record (EPIC).
