Job Summary
The SMH Level 2 Registered Nurse in the Pediatric Emergency Department (Peds ED) provides specialized nursing care to patients under the age of 19 presenting with urgent and emergent conditions at a Level 1 pediatric trauma and burn center. This role requires expertise in pediatric emergency nursing, including trauma and burn care, with a focus on fast-paced, complex case management. The nurse collaborates closely with interdisciplinary teams to deliver family-centered care, ensuring patient safety and quality outcomes in a challenging environment.
Responsibilities
Provide skilled nursing care to pediatric patients in emergency, trauma, and burn situations.
Perform patient assessments, monitor vital signs, and administer medications and treatments as prescribed.
Manage acute critical care cases, including trauma and burn injuries, with appropriate interventions.
Collaborate with physicians, specialists, and interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement care plans.
Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient care and clinical observations.
Participate in emergency response and trauma team activities within the pediatric ED.
Ensure compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
Provide education and support to patients and families regarding treatment plans and discharge instructions.
Serve as charge nurse per unit needs, managing workflow and staff coordination as required.
Engage in continuous professional development and maintain certifications relevant to pediatric emergency nursing.
Required Skills & Certifications
Active Registered Nurse license in New York State.
Minimum of 3 years of pediatric emergency nursing experience, including at least 2 years in a Pediatric ED setting.
Current American Heart Association certifications: BLS, PALS, and ACLS.
Experience working in a Level 1 pediatric trauma and burn center or equivalent environment.
Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and emergency response skills.
Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced, high-acuity pediatric emergency setting.
Preferred Skills & Certifications
Burn care experience highly desirable.
Certifications such as TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course), ATCN (Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses), or ABLS (Advanced Burn Life Support).
NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification preferred.
Experience with electronic medical record systems such as EPIC within the last year.
Special Considerations
Must be willing to work rotating day, evening, and night shifts including weekends, holidays, on-call, and callback as per unit needs.
Strong preference for candidates able to commit to approximately 48 hours per week.
Work environment includes a pediatric emergency department with trauma, critical care, and urgent care beds.
Scheduling
Rotating schedules covering day, evening, and night shifts.
Shift assignments include weekends, holidays, and on-call/ callback duties.
Shift schedules are determined based on unit staffing needs and patient care demands.
