Tiello has partnered with a reputable HVAC contractor known for high-quality design, management, and execution on complex projects throughout the San Francisco Bay Area who is seeking an experienced Safety Manager to lead the company's safety program across its California operations.
The Company’s project portfolio spans demanding, highly regulated environments including healthcare facilities and mission-critical tenant improvement projects (such as data centers) requiring a Safety Manager who understands the unique hazards, compliance standards, and coordination demands of working in occupied, sensitive, and operationally critical spaces. This role will build and enforce a strong safety culture across field crews, foremen, and project teams while ensuring compliance with OSHA, Cal/OSHA, and client-specific safety protocols.
Key Responsibilities
Develop, implement, and maintain company-wide safety programs and procedures tailored to HVAC mechanical work in healthcare, tenant improvement, and mission-critical/data center environments
Ensure full compliance with OSHA and Cal/OSHA regulations, as well as facility-specific requirements common to hospitals, healthcare campuses, and data center operators (e.g., infection control/ICRA protocols, interim life safety measures, change management procedures)
Conduct regular jobsite safety inspections and audits across active Bay Area projects, identifying hazards and driving corrective actions
Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, documentation, and reporting for accidents, injuries, or near-misses
Deliver safety training and onboarding for field employees, foremen, and subcontractors (OSHA 10/30, fall protection, confined space, lockout/tagout, hot work, ICRA/ILSM for healthcare sites, PPE, etc.)
Coordinate closely with hospital/facility safety officers and data center operations teams to align Company's safety practices with strict site access, infection control, and operational-continuity requirements
Partner with Project Managers and Superintendents to integrate safety planning into project scheduling, particularly for work performed in occupied or live-critical environments
Maintain required safety documentation, certifications, and training records for compliance, client audits, and prequalification requirements
Manage workers' compensation claims process in coordination with HR/insurance carriers, including return-to-work programs
Track and report safety metrics (TRIR, EMR, near-miss trends) to leadership
Lead or support pre-task planning (JHAs/JSAs) and toolbox talk programs across all project types
Stay current on evolving OSHA/Cal-OSHA regulations, healthcare facility safety codes (e.g., OSHPD/HCAI requirements), and data center industry safety standards
Support bid and prequalification processes by maintaining strong safety statistics and documentation for GC and client safety requirements
Travel to jobsites throughout the Bay Area (and occasionally Arizona, as needed) to support field safety oversight
Qualifications
5+ years of safety management experience within construction or mechanical/HVAC contracting; experience in healthcare construction and/or mission-critical/data center environments strongly preferred
Strong working knowledge of OSHA and Cal/OSHA regulations
Familiarity with healthcare facility safety requirements (ICRA, ILSM, OSHPD/HCAI) and/or data center site protocols (access control, change management, uptime-sensitive work practices) a significant plus
Experience managing safety across multiple concurrent, and often occupied or highly sensitive, jobsites
Strong incident investigation, reporting, and root-cause analysis skills
Excellent communication and training skills - able to engage field crews, subcontractors, and client-side safety/facility personnel effectively
Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred
Proficiency with safety management software/documentation systems
Valid driver's license and ability to travel regularly to Bay Area jobsites
Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, or related field preferred (or equivalent field experience)
CHST, CSP, or similar safety certification a plus
