Job description
Build the commercial side from the first repeatable deal to a team that can run without you in every room.
Experience 7+ years, including 2+ leading a sales team
This is the first senior commercial hire. For the first stretch you carry a number yourself: running discovery, demoing against a customer's own data, and closing. The job is to find out what a repeatable deal actually looks like here before hiring anyone to repeat it.
After that, you build: the pitch, the qualification criteria, the pricing conversation, the first account executives. You own the forecast and you own the honesty of it, which in an early-stage company matters more than the number itself.
Selling this is mostly diagnosis. A team arrives saying their AI feature is unreliable; the real question is which field has to be right, who currently checks it, and what happens when it is wrong. You will need to hold that conversation without an engineer in the room.
What you'd do
Carry a number personally first: run discovery, demo against the customer's own data, and close the early deals
Work out what a repeatable deal looks like (segment, trigger, buyer, objection) and write it down so it can be taught
Own pricing and packaging conversations with the founder, including when to walk away
Hire and coach the first account executives, and build the forecast discipline before the team needs it
Bring the blockers back to product with evidence, not anecdotes
What we need
Seven or more years in B2B software sales, with at least two leading or coaching a team
You have personally closed deals with technical buyers, recently enough to still do it
You have built a sales process from scratch rather than inheriting one
You can forecast honestly, including the deals that are not going to land
You have said no to a customer who was a bad fit, and can explain why
Nice to have, not required
You have sold data infrastructure, developer tools or APIs
Experience with a regulated or safety-critical buyer and their security review
You were an early commercial hire somewhere that worked
How we work
Small team, thin slices, shipped weekly. Nothing sits on a branch for a month.
Reviews are real. Every feature ships with its tests, and a bug found in review is cheaper than one found by a customer.
Safety-critical means the boring answer usually wins: fail closed, keep the receipt, don't guess.
We only claim what ships. That applies to the product, the roadmap and the offer letter.
How hiring works
1 A 30-minute call about something you've built and what was hard about it.
2 A working session on a real problem from this codebase. You can drive, or we can pair.
3 A conversation about how you make decisions when the evidence is thin.
4 References, then an offer. We aim to answer within a week at every stage.
