School Crossing Guard - 2026Title: School Crossing Guard - 2026Division/Section: PatrolPay Grade: CivilianStatus: SeasonalStarting Salary: $21.15 per hourFLSA Class: Non-ExemptBlood/Viral Pathogen Risk: Foreseeable RiskRetirement Class: Regular RiskDescriptionPrimary PurposeThe School Crossing Guard, is a seasonal civilian position, responsible for the safety and education of school-aged children on the proper safety requirements, while the children are in the designated cross-walks.Education and Qualification RequirementsHigh school graduate or equivalentValid FL Driver's LicenseBasic computer knowledgeBasic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is preferredSuccessfully complete the required yearly classroom training and pass a written exam with a minimum of 75%.Successfully complete the required yearly practical/field training without children present.Successfully complete the required yearly supervised onsite-observations with children present.DutiesIdentify when it is safe to allow school-aged children to begin crossing the designated crosswalkUtilize the eight step approach for crosswalk safetyInstruct school-aged children on the proper safety techniques while in crosswalksIdentify proper traffic gaps to safely cross school-aged childrenRepeat crossing procedures multiple times during a designated post assignmentVisually inspect school crossings and associated marking and signsOther duties as assignedJob Controls and ComplexitiesReport directly to the SCG CoordinatorKnowledge of and adherence to laws/agency policy/rules/regulations/Standard Operating ProceduresDisplay courtesy when dealing with the publicDemonstrate a positive working relationship with personnel in the agencyKnowledge of and adherence to the SCG training safety guidelines and verbal instructions for safe crossingsAdherence to leave and attendance policy and proceduresCommunicate effectively, verbally, electronically, and in writingContactsGeneral PublicSJSO employeesSchool district personnel and Bus transportation personnelPhysical EnvironmentSeasonal Part-Time- Monday Through Friday-When schools are in sessionPosition follows the St. Johns County School Board Calendar (180 days)Hours vary, work morning (1.5 hours) and afternoon (1.5 hours) schedule (can be multiple shifts)Work under moderately hazardous conditions (identifying gaps in traffic)Exposure to various weather conditionsExposure to the elements/pathogens is foreseeableBlow a whistle and hold a stop paddle above shoulder height for extended periods of timeSpeak understandablySee at normal range or with accommodationsHear at normal level or with accommodationsManual dexterityAmbulate independentlyFrequent grasp/pull/bend/squat/lift/carry items up to 20lbsFrequently walk and stand for extended periods of timeOccasionally reach above head/kneel/climb/stoopImportant InformationRegular attendance is critical to the success of this position and is required of all Agency personnel.
