Job description

Anticipated Armed School Security OfficerVacancy: Nonunion – 187 daysLocation: Holmes SchoolEffective: October 5, 2026Responsibilities Duties of this job include, but are not limited to:Provide security for the building and grounds of the Darien Public SchoolsActively respond to incidents, fights or other issues that threaten the safety of students, staff and guestsPatrol and monitor school property for unauthorized persons and, if needed, escort from the propertyEnsure the safety and security of the facility by enforcing District policies and proceduresReport and assist in the investigation of vandalism, theft and other incidents occurring on school propertyDocument all security activity and process incident reports as necessaryProvide security for school sponsored and non-school sponsored eventsAssist with student traffic in hallwaysAssist with arrival and dismissal of students and lunch supervision, as neededInspect and monitor the security of doors, windows and gates; reset alarm systems and test for proper operation as necessary; detect and report fire and safety hazards; respond to fire and burglar alarms and extinguish small fires; summon and communicate with police and fire department personnel as neededPerform such other duties as may be assigned from time to timeSupervision Reports to Director of SecurityQualificationsMust possess strong verbal communication skills and have the ability to professionally interact with students, staff and parentsMust have the ability to maintain strict confidentialityMust have excellent integrity and good moral character and initiativeMinimum of 15 years prior experience as a sworn law enforcement officer with an organized local police department or the Division of State Police within the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection and provide positive references from each prior employer served in a law enforcement capacityMust have been certified by the Police Officer Standards and Training Council while serving as a sworn law enforcement officer, and must have retired or separated in good standing from an organized local police department or Division of State Police as required by PA 13-188If the candidate has prior service with the military, must supply proof of an honorable dischargeMust not have been officially found to be unqualified for reasons relating to mental health by a qualified medical professional while serving as a sworn law enforcement officer or separating from service as a sworn law enforcement officerMust hold and maintain a valid driver's licenseMust successfully complete annual training pursuant to the Police Officer Standards and Training Council requirements an must successfully complete an annual firearms training provided by a certified firearms instructor that meets or exceeds the standards of the Police Officer Standards and Training Council and any other training required by law or Board policyMust keep all security certifications and training requirements current including but not limited to permits, certifications and/or licenses to carry and use firearms or other weapons on school propertyMust meet all requirements for an armed security guard pursuant to Connecticut law, as amended from time to time, and must meet all requirements of qualified retired law enforcement officer pursuant to 18 USC 926C, as amended from time to time.Physical Requirements Seeing, hearing, speaking and writing clearly; occasionally reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling. Frequently sitting, standing, running and walking, which may be required for long periods of time and may involve climbing stairs and walking up and down inclines and on uneven terrain. Additional physical requirements include frequent lifting and moving up to 20 pounds and occasional lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds.
