Title: School Specialist
Qualifications: 1. Bachelor's degree in education, school psychology, counseling, social work, or a related field; Master's degree or National Board Certification preferred. 2. A current North Carolina professional educator license. 3. Minimum of five (5) years of successful experience supporting student academics, behavior, graduation rate, and/or attendance. 4. Accomplished or higher on Standards 1 and 4 of the teacher evaluation instrument or equivalent evaluation.
Reports To: Building Principal
Job Goal: The School's Specialist serves as a key member of the school leadership and student support teams. This Specialist ensures that learning environments are well structured, expectations are explicitly taught, student behavior and engagement are actively observed, positive interactions are maximized, and corrections are delivered fluently and consistently. The Specialist provides job-embedded coaching, professional development, and data analysis support to strengthen instructional practices, school culture, and student outcomes. The role focuses on schoolwide, systemic improvements in academic achievement, positive student behavior, graduation rate, and attendance.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
1. Supports administrators and staff in designing, implementing, and sustaining predictable, well-structured academic and behavioral systems aligned to STOIC and district priorities.
2. Assists in establishing clear routines, procedures, schedules, and attendance practices that maximize instructional time and student engagement.
3. Coaches teachers and staff in explicitly teaching academic and behavioral expectations across classroom and common areas aligned to Safe and Civil Schools.
4. Assists teachers and leadership teams in collecting, reviewing, and analyzing academic, behavioral, and attendance data (e.g., instructional data, discipline referrals, opportunities to respond, chronic absenteeism).
5. Uses observation and data trends to identify and design targeted action steps to strengthen student outcomes.
6. Coaches staff on increasing positive interactions, feedback, and reinforcement strategies to strengthen student relationships, motivation, and attendance. Revised 4/14/2026 7. Supports development and monitoring of positive behavior and attendance incentives aligned to school culture and student needs.
8. Supports staff in implementing consistent, instructional, and minimally disruptive correction strategies aligned to STOIC principles.
9. Supports facilitation of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), student support team meetings, and problem-solving sessions focused on improving academic outcomes, behavior, and attendance.
10. Engages families and community partners to support academic success, positive behavior, and consistent attendance.
11. Develops, monitors, and refines school and district level guides, resources, and support tools related to STOIC implementation.
12. Attends and actively participates in district meetings and professional development for academic, behavior, and attendance support.
13. Ensures fidelity to grant requirements, timelines, and documentation.
14. Follows all New Hanover County Schools policies, procedures, and applicable state and federal regulations.

Terms of Employment: Ten-month work year/At Will/FLSA Exempt
Starting Salary and/or Grade: Salary based on state salary scale
Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board and local policy on evaluation of personnel.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Strong understanding of STOIC principles and schoolwide behavior systems
Ability to analyze academic, behavior, and attendance data for instructional decision-making
Knowledge of adult learning principles and ability to apply them when coaching and supporting staff.
Strong coaching, collaboration, and communication skills
Ability to manage multiple initiatives with fidelity and follow-through
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
