Senior CNC MachinistElk Grove, California - Posted on September 2, 2026 Published By Rodney NelsonTrillium Engineering Services is seeking a highly skilled Senior Machinist (Machinist III) with extensive hands-on experience programming, setting up, and machining large, complex components on Horizontal Boring Mills (HBM).Pay Range: $40.00–$48.00 per hour, depending on experience. This is not a production CNC operator position. The ideal candidate will have the ability to independently take ownership of custom, one-off, and short-run machining projects from blueprint interpretation and job planning through CNC programming, custom fixturing, setup, machining, and inspection.This position offers a high level of technical responsibility and autonomy. The successful candidate will also serve as a technical resource for less experienced machinists and contribute to tooling, cutter selection, fixturing, and process-development decisions.Important Qualifications Applicants should have demonstrated experience in most of the following areas:CNC programming using Mastercam or similar CAM softwareSetup and operation of Horizontal Boring MillsLarge-part and large-weldment machiningDesigning, fabricating, and modifying custom fixturesSafe rigging and handling of large components using overhead cranesAdvanced blueprint reading and GD&T interpretationMachining stainless steel and structural/specialty alloysIndependently managing machining jobs from programming through completionWorking with minimal supervision in a custom job-shop environmentKey Responsibilities CNC Programming & MachiningProgram complex parts using Mastercam or comparable CAM softwareSet up and operate Horizontal Boring MillsMachine large, heavy, irregular, and high-value componentsDevelop efficient machining strategies for one-off and short-run projectsEstablish machining approaches that account for distortion, deflection, vibration, and thermal movementHold tight tolerances on complex and distortion-prone componentsPerform first-article and in-process inspectionsTroubleshoot machining and dimensional issues as they ariseCustom Fixturing & Job PlanningDesign, fabricate, and modify custom fixtures and workholdingPlan complete machining setups before cutting materialConsider load paths, workpiece deflection, thermal movement, accessibility, and rigidityDevelop solutions for challenging alignment and workholding requirementsTroubleshoot vibration, access, alignment, and setup challengesProvide input on manufacturability and process improvementsCrane & Large-Part HandlingSafely rig, lift, rotate, and position large componentsPerform complex setups involving overhead crane movement and repositioningUnderstand center of gravity, load limits, rigging requirements, and safe handling practicesMaintain a strong focus on safety when working with large and high-value componentsTechnical LeadershipServe as a senior technical resource on the shop floorMentor and support less experienced machinistsRecommend machining approaches, tooling, and best practicesAssist with cutter, tooling, and fixturing selectionProvide input regarding specialty tooling and cutters needed for upcoming projectsHelp improve machining processes, setup strategies, and overall shop efficiencyBenefits401(k)401(k) with 6% company matchDental insuranceFlexible spending accountHealth insuranceHealth savings accountLife insurancePaid time offVision insuranceTrillium Technical has been recruiting and placing Engineering professionals for over 30 years.
