About the Company
Our client is a publicly traded, financially strong insurance organization that has been profitable every year since 2007. They operate with a startup mentality backed by fully built-out infrastructure, including experienced IT, HR, legal, and claims teams. The company runs on a custom-built platform with significant AI investment, and carries excess capital to deploy into growth. They're expanding aggressively into new E&S commercial property segments and new state markets over the next several years.
About the Role
This is a production-focused Senior E&S Commercial Underwriter role supporting the company's expansion into warehouses, strip malls, lessor's risk, and other commercial property classes beyond their existing commercial coastal residential book. The right candidate brings deep underwriting acumen combined with strong broker relationship skills. This is a \"hunter\" role, not a desk underwriting position. You'll be assigned specific wholesale broker relationships and expected to build your own portfolio over time.
Key Responsibilities:
Underwrite and evaluate E&S commercial property accounts across cat-exposed properties, warehouses, strip malls, commercial coastal residential, and lessor's risk segments
Assess risks using knowledge of commercial sprinkler system ratings, fire protection requirements, and safety standards
Build and maintain wholesale broker relationships within target markets
Contribute to underwriting guidelines, policies, and procedures as the book grows
Conduct renewal underwriting to manage and improve book performance
Collaborate cross-functionally with Claims, Product Management, and Marketing
Analyze wholesaler books of business on a semi-annual basis and communicate findings to Sales leadership
Mentor less-experienced underwriters and underwriting assistants
Participate in cross-departmental projects including audits and user acceptance testing
Qualifications:
Minimum 5 years commercial property underwriting experience
Deep familiarity with E&S markets, distribution, and underwriting practices
Experience underwriting warehouses, lessor's risk, and/or other specialty commercial property segments
Working knowledge of commercial sprinkler system ratings and fire protection standards
Familiarity with Florida, Texas, and/or South Carolina property markets
Demonstrated ability to build broker relationships and drive new business production
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Bachelor's degree preferred; professional designations (CPCU, AU, ARM, AINS, AIM, AIC) a plus
