Job description
Controls Engineer – Automation Project
Project
Support the design, programming, debugging, and commissioning of a custom automation build project .
This is a custom automation/design and commissioning role—not production support .
Must-Have Experience
5–10 years of relevant controls/automation experience
PLC/HMI programming , with Beckhoff strongly preferred
If no Beckhoff: strong Rockwell experience with Structured Text or C#
Custom machine/automation build experience
Strong troubleshooting, debugging, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills
Genuine interest in hands-on support and debugging
Cognex vision experience is a plus
Working knowledge of electrical circuits, panels, pneumatics, hydraulics, robotics, VFDs, servos, and industrial communication networks
Education is secondary to relevant industry experience
Wastewater industry experience is not relevant/required
Responsibilities
Develop PLC/HMI controls software packages
Program robotic and controls equipment to customer specifications
Review customer specifications and ensure equipment functionality meets requirements
Support machine startup, commissioning, debugging, and customer acceptance
Develop equipment operation manuals and service documentation
Assist with controls/design reviews and functional checks
Provide technical support and end-user training
Perform preventative maintenance when required
Work directly with customers in potentially high-pressure environments
Maintain strong safety standards and professional customer relationships
Schedule & Project Duration
Design phase: 40–50 hours/week
Commissioning: 50–60 hours/week
Design through commissioning: approximately 16–18 weeks
Travel / Location
Installation/commissioning site: Baja, Mexico
Valid U.S. passport required before travel
Travel is expected approximately 50 weeks out , so candidates need to secure their passport well in advance
Candidates must be willing to work onsite 5 days/week
Non-local candidates are welcome, provided they can relocate/travel as required
For candidates relocating to Nashville for the project , their pay rate should account for per diem
Expenses covered for travel to Mexico
Ideal Candidate Profile
The strongest candidates will be controls/automation engineers with hands-on custom machine-building experience , particularly those with Beckhoff PLC/HMI programming and commissioning experience . Strong Rockwell candidates may also be considered if they have Structured Text or C# experience and are willing to learn Beckhoff.
Passport, travel availability, willingness to work extended hours during commissioning, and comfort with hands-on debugging are important screening points.
