Senior DevOps Engineer
5 DAYS ONSITE
The Role
We are looking for a Senior DevOps Engineer to take hands-on ownership of infrastructure across a complex AWS, Linux, networking and distributed edge/IoT environment.
This is a senior individual-contributor role combining DevOps, SRE, cloud infrastructure, automation, observability and security. You will work closely with technical leadership to assess the existing environment, identify areas for improvement and deliver infrastructure modernisation projects from design through to production.
The initial focus will be on a large distributed Linux/IoT device estate, before expanding into the wider AWS environment.
Key Responsibilities
Infrastructure & IoT
Own the reliability, security and manageability of distributed Linux/edge infrastructure.
Develop automation for remote deployment, configuration, updates and diagnostics.
Improve visibility of device health, software versions and configuration.
Design reliable deployment, rollback and recovery processes for geographically distributed devices.
Troubleshoot issues across devices, networks and cloud services.
AWS & Cloud Infrastructure
Design, maintain and optimise production AWS infrastructure.
Assess availability, scalability, security, performance and cost.
Manage dependencies between cloud and on-premise/edge environments.
Work with developers to ensure infrastructure supports reliable application deployment and operation.
Automation & Infrastructure as Code
Develop production-quality Python tooling for infrastructure, monitoring and diagnostics.
Build and maintain Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, Ansible and/or AWS CDK.
Improve CI/CD and production deployment processes.
Reduce configuration drift and manual operational tasks.
Implement appropriate testing, validation and rollback procedures.
Observability & SRE
Improve monitoring and alerting across Linux systems, devices, networks and cloud infrastructure.
Investigate complex production incidents using logs, metrics and network data.
Perform root-cause analysis and implement preventative improvements.
Create and maintain runbooks, architecture documentation and operational procedures.
Networking & Security
Design and maintain secure device-to-cloud connectivity.
Work with VPNs, firewalls, load balancers and network controls.
Apply security best practices across Linux and AWS environments, including least privilege, credential management and patching.
Contribute to infrastructure security controls and SOC 2 / audit readiness.
Architecture & Technical Leadership
Assess existing infrastructure and create prioritised modernisation plans.
Lead projects from technical assessment and architecture through implementation and operational handover.
Evaluate build vs. buy decisions and introduce tooling where it provides genuine operational value.
Mentor engineers and provide technical direction to contractors or specialist resources.
Required Experience
5+ years in DevOps, SRE, Infrastructure or Production Engineering.
5+ years hands-on AWS experience in production environments.
Strong Linux administration and troubleshooting skills.
Strong understanding of TCP/IP networking, firewalls, VPNs and load balancing.
Experience with Docker and distributed production systems.
Experience operating hybrid cloud/on-premise infrastructure.
Strong Python development skills for infrastructure automation.
Practical experience with Terraform, Ansible and/or AWS CDK.
Strong monitoring, observability and production troubleshooting experience.
Experience taking technical projects from design → implementation → production.
Strong communication and ability to work with both technical and business stakeholders.
Preferred Experience
Large-scale Linux server, IoT, edge or distributed device fleets.
AWS IoT / AWS IoT Greengrass v2.
Secure device provisioning, deployment and lifecycle management.
High-availability platforms supporting large user populations.
SOC 2 or similar security/audit frameworks.
Startup or high-growth technology environments.
Technical mentoring or leadership without formal line-management responsibility.
Ideal Profile
You should be comfortable moving between high-level architecture and hands-on engineering. The successful candidate will be able to investigate unfamiliar systems, troubleshoot complex production issues, make pragmatic architectural decisions and then implement the solution themselves.
The role particularly suits someone who enjoys broad technical ownership, rather than being restricted to one area of DevOps.
