Job description
An established transportation engineering consultancy is looking to appoint a Director of Engineering to lead and further develop its transportation practice in Western New York.
This is a senior leadership position overseeing an existing engineering team and established project portfolio , rather than a start-up or purely business development role.
The successful candidate will have a background in highway, roadway or bridge engineering and enough technical credibility to lead experienced engineers, while also taking responsibility for clients, people, project performance and the continued growth of the group.
The Opportunity
You’ll have overall responsibility for a well-established transportation engineering team, working closely with experienced Project Managers and senior leadership.
The role combines four key areas:
Team leadership and development
Client relationship management
Project and technical oversight
Strategic growth and business development
You won’t be expected to personally design every project or operate as a full-time salesperson. The priority is finding a credible transportation leader who understands the work, can develop people and has the relationships and commercial awareness to help take an established practice forward.
What We’re Looking For
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering
New York Professional Engineer (PE) license required
10+ years of transportation engineering experience
Strong background in highway/roadway and/or bridge engineering
Experience leading transportation projects, teams or programs
Good understanding of New York transportation design standards and project delivery
Experience working with state and/or local transportation agencies
Established relationships within the New York transportation market
Ability to engage credibly with both technical teams and senior-level clients
Previous involvement in proposals, client development and winning work
Strong leadership and communication skills
The Right Profile
This could suit an experienced Project Manager, Senior Project Manager, Department Manager or existing Director who feels ready for broader responsibility.
You may already be leading major transportation projects and key client relationships but want more influence over people, strategy and the direction of a business unit .
Equally, you could already be operating at Director level but be interested in joining an organization where you have the platform and autonomy to make a meaningful impact.
The important part is that you remain credible technically . This isn't a position for someone completely removed from engineering delivery.
