Job description

QuEra Computing is a leader in neutral-atom quantum computing. We are building advanced quantum computers designed to solve problems beyond the practical reach of today’s classical systems.

Our multidisciplinary team includes physicists, engineers, software developers, and operations professionals working together to move quantum computing from scientific research toward practical, large-scale applications.

Joining QuEra’s Facilities team means supporting the specialized laboratories and infrastructure where our quantum computers are designed, assembled, tested, and operated. Reliable electrical, mechanical, cooling, environmental, and life-safety systems are essential to the safety of our employees and the performance of our technology.

Job Summary

QuEra is seeking a hands-on Senior Facilities Engineer to support the operation, maintenance, reliability, and continuous improvement of our laboratories, technical spaces, and office facilities.

This individual will perform preventive and corrective maintenance, monitor the Building Management System, respond to facility incidents, oversee service providers, and support infrastructure projects. The position requires substantial knowledge of mechanical and electrical building systems and the judgment to independently troubleshoot moderately complex facility issues while following established procedures.

The successful candidate will be comfortable managing routine work with limited supervision, collaborating with internal engineering teams, mentoring less-experienced team members, and escalating higher-risk or more complex issues when appropriate.

Responsibilities

Facility and Infrastructure Maintenance

Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on facility equipment and building systems.

Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and coordinate maintenance of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, cooling, and life-safety systems.

Monitor the Building Management System and respond to alarms involving temperature, humidity, cooling, electrical systems, and other facility conditions.

Investigate facility alarms and abnormal operating conditions, using established procedures and sound judgment to resolve or accelerate issues.

Operate and maintain building systems, including HVAC and chilled-water equipment, plumbing, fire-suppression systems, emergency power equipment, and safety systems.

Support the operation of electrical distribution, generators, UPS systems, air handlers, pumps, and other facility infrastructure.

Monitor laboratory temperature and humidity and respond to environmental conditions that could affect sensitive equipment or ongoing technical work.

Perform routine facility rounds and document equipment readings, conditions, alarms, deficiencies, and corrective actions.

Support energy-efficiency measures and building-system optimization initiatives.

Perform routine and moderately complex work with limited supervision and provide support or guidance to other facilities team members.

Escalate conditions that could affect employee safety, laboratory operations, sensitive equipment, or business continuity.

Coordinate and oversee service providers performing maintenance, repair, inspection, installation, or testing activities.

Support QuEra’s work-approval process by reviewing planned scope, conducting pre-work briefings, monitoring vendor activities, and completing post-work inspections.

Confirm that vendor work is performed in accordance with QuEra’s safety requirements, operating procedures, site rules, and approved scope.

Coordinate vendor access to mechanical rooms, electrical rooms, laboratories, rooftops, and other controlled areas.

Validate that equipment and building systems have been returned to normal operation following vendor work.

Support updates to equipment records, technical files, drawings, manuals, and as-built documentation.

Identify incomplete or deficient vendor work and coordinate corrective action.

Site Administration and Incident Support

Prepare and maintain facility logs, permits, inspection records, maintenance documentation, and equipment records.

Develop or support Maintenance Operation Protocols (MOPs), standard operating procedures, emergency operating procedures, and maintenance scripts.

Identify single points of failure and recommend practical measures to reduce operational risk.

Respond to facility incidents, including equipment failures, utility interruptions, water leaks, temperature or humidity excursions, fire-system alarms, and other abnormal conditions.

Assist with incident investigation, recovery, root-cause analysis, documentation, and follow-up corrective actions.

Follow established escalation and communication procedures during facility incidents.

Support emergency-response activities and communicate facility conditions clearly to internal stakeholders.

Maintain accurate records in QuEra’s work-order or computerized maintenance-management system.

Work Orders and Infrastructure Projects

Complete facility work orders and service requests in a timely and professional manner.

Troubleshoot and repair facility, laboratory-support, and office equipment within the individual’s qualifications and authorized scope.

Make minor changes and repairs to mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and specialized facility systems as directed.

Support laboratory buildouts, equipment installations, facility modifications, and infrastructure-improvement projects.

Assist with testing and commissioning new or modified facility systems.

Coordinate shutdowns and maintenance activities to minimize disruption to laboratory and business operations.

Participate in facility inspections and help maintain compliance with applicable building, fire, safety, and environmental requirements.

Recommend infrastructure projects based on equipment condition, recurring failures, operational risks, and facility needs.

Collaboration and Inventory Management

Collaborate with Facilities, Hardware Engineering, Laboratory Operations, IT, Security, Environmental Health and Safety, and other teams to resolve facility issues.

Communicate planned maintenance, facility incidents, and potential operational impacts to affected stakeholders.

Work effectively within the Facilities team and mentor colleagues on general maintenance activities when appropriate.

Monitor inventory levels for critical spare parts, consumables, tools, and emergency-response materials.

Recommend purchases needed to maintain appropriate stock levels and support facility reliability.

Promote a safe, organized, responsive, and service-oriented facilities environment.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Five or more years of experience operating or maintaining mechanical and electrical systems in a data center, laboratory, hospital, advanced manufacturing facility, research environment, or other technically demanding facility.

Substantial practical knowledge of HVAC, electrical distribution, plumbing, fire suppression, emergency power, and building life-safety systems.

Experience monitoring and responding to alarms through a Building Management System or comparable monitoring platform.

Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot building-system and equipment problems using established procedures and sound technical judgment.

Experience coordinating and overseeing contractors and service providers.

Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, mechanical drawings, electrical one-line diagrams, and facility procedures.

Strong documentation, organization, and communication skills.

Ability to manage routine work with limited supervision, support junior team members, and recognize when an issue requires escalation.

Commitment to following electrical, mechanical, laboratory, and general workplace safety requirements.

Ability to participate in occasional evening, weekend, emergency, or on-call work.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s or associate degree, technical diploma, apprenticeship, or equivalent training in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, HVAC, building systems, engineering technology, or a related field.

Experience working in a data-center or other high-availability operating environment.

Experience supporting scientific laboratories, semiconductor facilities, cleanrooms, advanced manufacturing, or high-performance computing environments.

Familiarity with UPS systems, generators, switchgear, chilled-water systems, air handlers, pumps, and environmental-control systems.

Experience preparing or working under MOPs, SOPs, EOPs, permits, or formal change-control procedures.

Experience with computerized maintenance-management or work-order systems.

Massachusetts electrical, refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing, or related trade license is beneficial but not required.

OSHA, NFPA 70E, or other relevant safety training is beneficial.

This is an on-site position supporting QuEra’s laboratories and facilities in the Boston, Massachusetts area.

The position may require participation in an on-call rotation and occasional work outside normal business hours.

The employee will work in laboratories, mechanical and electrical rooms, office areas, rooftops, loading areas, and active construction environments.

The role may require standing, walking, climbing ladders, working around operating equipment, and lifting or moving materials consistent with applicable safety requirements.

Salary Range: $110,000 - $140,000. We consistently monitor external market data and update base salary ranges accordingly.
