Job description
Senior QA Engineer – SaaS Platform | Birmingham, AL | Permanent | Progression into QA Lead
We’re working with a fast growing, financially strong SaaS business in Birmingham that is bringing ownership of its technology platform and engineering capability in-house.
They’re looking for a Senior QA Engineer to become the senior quality specialist within the new internal engineering team.
This is not purely a test execution role. Initially, you’ll be hands-on testing the platform, APIs, integrations and backend functionality, while helping establish the QA processes, automation approach and overall testing strategy.
As the team grows, the plan is to hire an additional QA Engineer underneath you, giving this person a natural progression into a QA Lead position.
What you'll be doing
Own hands-on testing across a business-critical SaaS platform.
Test APIs, integrations, backend services, databases and user-facing functionality.
Build and improve automated testing across the application and integration landscape.
Help define the wider QA strategy, processes, standards and tooling as engineering is brought in-house.
Work closely with Software Engineers and the CTO to improve quality throughout the development lifecycle.
Identify gaps in existing test coverage and introduce more robust regression, integration and end-to-end testing.
Help create a scalable QA function as the internal engineering team grows.
Eventually support and lead an additional QA hire.
What we’re looking for
Strong experience as a Senior QA Engineer, SDET, Automation Engineer or similar. Ideally with microsoft / C# experience!
A genuinely hands-on background – someone comfortable getting into the detail and testing the product themselves.
Strong API and integration testing experience.
Experience testing backend systems and validating data/database behaviour.
Good automation experience and an understanding of how to build sustainable automated test coverage.
Experience working with modern SaaS or web-based platforms.
Comfortable working within a Microsoft technology environment.
Able to think beyond individual test cases and contribute to broader QA strategy and process.
Some mentoring or technical leadership experience would be useful, although you do not need to already be a QA Manager.
Why consider it?
The timing is probably the most interesting part of the opportunity.
The company is moving away from an outsourced/offshore engineering model and building its own internal capability, giving the new team much greater ownership of the platform, IP and technical direction.
You’d join at the point where there is still plenty to shape – helping determine how QA should operate, while remaining close to the technology and product.
It should suit someone who wants to stay properly hands-on technically , but is ready to take more ownership and progress towards leading a QA function rather than simply joining another established testing team.
