Job description
Role:
Senior Software Engineer (Generalist / AI-Native)
Location:
San Mateo, 4 days in office
Compensation:
$250,000 - $300,000 base + equity (depending on experience)
We are partnered with a fast-growing, VC-backed AI company building a deep technical intelligence layer for the physical world. The platform takes large volumes of complex technical documentation, often hundreds of gigabytes per project, and turns it into a connected, searchable knowledge graph. Users can ask questions, spot discrepancies and automate expert review workflows, and every answer links back to its source for verification. The product is already live on major enterprise projects worth hundreds of millions to billions of dollars, and some of the largest companies in the industry work with the team as design partners.
What You'll Do:
Take ownership of the company's most pressing technical problems, work out what needs to be done and deliver the outcome.
Move across the stack as priorities change: backend services, data processing pipelines, ML model integration, infrastructure, performance and frontend.
Scale and harden a multi-step document processing pipeline so it can serve many more enterprise customers.
Optimize and improve models where off-the-shelf OCR, LLMs and tooling fall short.
Debug production issues and improve reliability, including performance and memory problems.
Use AI coding agents to speed up development: delegate work, review what comes back, iterate and ship.
What We're Looking For:
High agency: you see a problem and think "this needs to work, I'll figure out how." You're comfortable defining requirements yourself, making judgment calls and owning the result.
AI-native engineering: you use tools like Claude and other coding agents heavily and effectively in your day-to-day work, well beyond occasional autocomplete.
Strong generalist ability: you have solid experience with Python and PostgreSQL and can contribute across backend, data, infrastructure and web application layers with React.
Proven builder: you have taken real systems from ambiguity to production, ideally at an early-stage startup, an AI-native company, a research-heavy environment or a 0-to-1 team inside a larger tech company.
Customer orientation: you care about the practical impact of what you build, not just technical novelty.
