Job description

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Tax Manager to lead tax compliance, planning, and advisory services across individual, estate, gift, corporate, and partnership engagements. This role will manage and review complex tax work, mentor and supervise staff, maintain client relationships, and ensure quality control and regulatory compliance. The Senior Tax Manager will be a technical resource for the firm, drive process improvements, and contribute to business development efforts.

Key Responsibilities

Manage and review preparation of federal, state, and local tax returns for individuals, estates, trusts, gifts, corporations (C and S), and partnerships, ensuring accuracy and compliance with tax laws and deadlines.

Lead and mentor a team of tax professionals: assign work, review deliverables, provide coaching and performance feedback, and develop training plans.

Conduct complex tax research and provide practical, timely recommendations for tax planning and risk mitigation.

Perform technical reviews and quality control of tax workpapers, computations, and supporting documentation prior to client delivery.

Develop and maintain strong client relationships; act as primary point of contact for complex tax matters, client meetings, and issue resolution.

Coordinate with other practice areas (audit, advisory, wealth management) to deliver integrated client solutions and support cross-functional engagements.

Oversee tax provision and compliance processes, drive improvements to workflows, and implement best practices and automated tools to increase efficiency.

Manage client expectations, engagement budgets, and staffing levels; prepare engagement estimates and monitor project profitability.

Serve as a senior escalation resource during examinations, notices, and disputes with tax authorities; coordinate responses and strategy with clients and advisors.

Participate in business development activities, including proposal preparation, client presentations, and thought leadership initiatives.

Qualifications

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required or strongly preferred; active license in good standing.

7+ years of progressive tax experience in public accounting, including prior manager or senior manager experience.

Demonstrated technical expertise with individual, estate and gift, corporate (C and S), and partnership taxation; experience performing and reviewing complex returns.

Proven experience in review and quality control processes, with strong attention to detail and accuracy.

Hands-on experience with common tax software (for example: ProSystem fx, Lacerte, UltraTax, CCH), Microsoft Excel, and tax research tools.

Strong leadership and people management skills, with a track record of mentoring and developing staff.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to explain complex tax concepts to clients and non-technical stakeholders.

Ability to manage multiple engagements and deadlines, prioritize workload, and maintain high service levels under pressure.

Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or Tax required; Masters in Taxation, JD, or advanced degree preferred.

Experience in business development and client service, including proposal writing and cross-selling services, is a plus.
