I've spoken to plenty of Senior Tax Managers who would make very good Directors.
The problem is, their current firm already has a Director. And a Partner. And another Partner who's been talking about retiring for the last 5 years.
Nobody's going anywhere.
So they carry on doing a good job, looking after clients, managing people, and hoping that eventually something opens up.
Now, there's nothing wrong with being patient. But there's also nothing wrong with wondering how long you're supposed to wait.
I'm working with a growing CPA firm in Wooster, Ohio, that's looking at who will lead the office in the years ahead.
And rather than deciding exactly what level that person needs to be, they're keeping their options open.
If you're a Senior Manager who's ready to take on more, they're happy to have that conversation.
If you're already operating at Director level, or have the experience to take on a more senior leadership position.
The firm has recently received investment and is planning to grow through acquisitions as well as organically. They're also investing in technology, infrastructure, and people.
And as part of that, they're looking for someone who can become an important part of the future leadership of the Wooster office.
You'll need to be a CPA, comfortable managing complex tax engagements, looking after client relationships, and developing a team.
They'll also want you involved in business development.
At the more senior end, that means bringing in work, growing existing relationships, and helping decide where the practice goes next.
Some people are perfectly happy managing a portfolio, doing good technical work, and going home.
Nothing wrong with that whatsoever.
But if you're the sort of person who's been thinking, "I could probably run this place if someone gave me the chance," then this might be worth looking into.
And if you're already doing that elsewhere, perhaps you'd like to do it somewhere that's actively investing in growth.
