Job Title:

Software Engineer

Location:

Austin, Texas

Job Title/High Level Position Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Software Engineer - Orthopedic Navigation, AR & Robotics to join the Enovis Enabling Technologies team developing next-generation computer-assisted orthopedic surgery systems.

This is a hands-on software development position focused on real-time orthopedic navigation, with primary applications in augmented reality surgical navigation and navigation integrated with robotic/mechatronic systems for knee and shoulder procedures. The engineer will work as part of a multidisciplinary software and engineering team of six or more developers and will be expected to serve as a lead software programmer for an assigned AR or robotic navigation application.

The ideal candidate is an experienced software engineer who is equally comfortable developing complex 3D applications, implementing mathematical and navigation algorithms, interfacing with hardware and tracking systems, and debugging real-time system behavior in the lab or operating-room environment.

Key Responsibilities

Serve as a lead software developer for an assigned orthopedic navigation application, with responsibility for significant portions of the software architecture, implementation, integration, debugging, and technical execution.

Design, develop, test, and maintain software for augmented reality and robotic-assisted orthopedic navigation systems, including knee and shoulder applications.

Develop high-performance applications using C++ and Unity, including 3D visualization, surgical workflow, navigation algorithms, user interfaces, and hardware integration.

Develop and maintain software operating across Windows and Android platforms, including communication and integration between distributed computing devices, sensors, navigation hardware, and robotic/mechatronic systems.

Implement and integrate mathematical algorithms involving 3D coordinate systems, rigid-body transformations, registration, calibration, optical tracking, sensor data, kinematics, surgical measurements, and spatial visualization.

Develop AR functionality including virtual object placement, alignment of virtual and physical coordinate systems, head or camera tracking, surgical guidance, 3D visualization, and intuitive surgeon-facing user interfaces.

Develop navigation functionality supporting robotic-assisted procedures, including communication with robotic and mechatronic subsystems, coordinate-system registration, real-time tracking, instrumentation, system-state management, workflow, safety-related interfaces, and exchange of navigation and control information.

Diagnose issues that cross software/hardware boundaries, including timing, communication, threading, synchronization, performance, tracking, sensor, graphics, and mechatronic behavior.

Develop unit and integration tests and participate in formal software and system verification and validation activities.

Work closely with project management, systems, electrical, mechanical, biomedical, robotics, clinical, quality, testing, and regulatory engineers to resolve multidisciplinary product-development issues.

Scope / Role Dimensions

Works as part of a 6+ person software development team supporting orthopedic navigation and enabling-technology products.

Functions as a lead programmer/technical software owner for an AR navigation or robotic navigation application while collaborating with other software engineers and technical leads.

Expected to personally design, write, review, integrate, debug, and test production software rather than functioning as a project or people manager.

Works on systems where software interacts directly with the physical world through tracking systems, cameras, sensors, surgical instruments, embedded electronics, and robotic/mechatronic devices.

Operates at both the application and system-integration levels and is expected to understand how software behavior affects navigation accuracy, system performance, clinical workflow, and medical-device safety.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related field

3+ years of experience in software engineering, or complex product development

Experience with software development using C++, C# and Unity preferred

Experience integrating software with physical hardware systems (e.g., cameras, microcontrollers, robotics, tracking systems)

Experience developing and debugging software on Windows and Android platforms.

Strong understanding of object-oriented software design, software architecture, multithreading, asynchronous processing, memory management, network communication, and performance-sensitive application development.

Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git), and Agile development methodologies

Ability to take ownership of a complex software application or subsystem and drive technical issues through resolution.

Desired Qualifications

Experience developing surgical navigation, image-guided surgery, robotics, augmented reality, or computer-assisted surgery systems.

Experience with optical tracking, computer vision, sensor fusion, registration, calibration, or navigation algorithms.

Experience integrating software with robotic or mechatronic systems, including real-time communication and hardware/software interfaces.

Experience developing 3D AR applications involving tracking and registration of virtual content to physical objects.

Experience with C#, Java/Kotlin, Android Studio, Visual Studio, Git, and contemporary CI/CD and software-analysis tools in addition to strong C++ and Unity skills.

Experience with TCP/IP, UDP, serial communications, device interfaces, and distributed real-time systems.

Experience developing software for regulated medical devices and familiarity with IEC 62304, ISO 13485, ISO 14971, FDA Design Controls, and software verification/validation.

Core Competencies

Hands-On Software Engineering: Personally capable of designing, implementing, debugging, and delivering complex production software.

Technical Ownership: Takes responsibility for an application or major software subsystem and drives it from requirements and architecture through integration and release.

Collaboration: Works effectively across engineering, clinical, and commercial teams

Communication: Clearly communicates technical system concepts to diverse stakeholders

Execution & Accountability: Ensures system deliverables meet performance, safety, and regulatory requirements

Working Conditions

Primarily office or laboratory-based environment

Occasional travel to manufacturing sites, clinical validation sites, and surgeon workshops

Hands-on interaction with surgical instruments, navigation hardware, and integrated testing environments
