Job description

The Principal Solution Architect designs and guides the implementation of complex, enterprise-wide technology solutions. This role transforms strategic vision into actionable roadmaps and mobilizes cross-functional teams by building strong coalitions across the institution.

The position provides architectural leadership across clinical, research, administrative, and enterprise technology environments and plays a critical role in evaluating emerging technologies, integrating clinical and administrative systems, and supporting major transformation initiatives.

The Principal Solution Architect leads requirements development activities, drives technology portfolio cataloging and optimization, translates business requirements into technical solutions, delivers global and local solution designs for key initiatives, and provides architectural oversight of project execution.

This position plays a critical role in evaluating emerging technologies, integrating clinical and administrative systems, and ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations and standards. Reporting to the CTO, the Principal Solution Architect works directly with leadership and staff throughout the technology organization as well as with research and clinical leaders.

Develop solution and integration architecture for EHR, ERP, digital, and IT transformation initiatives.

Design secure, scalable, and interoperable systems across clinical, research, and administrative domains.

Establish architecture principles and an escalation model for resolving project-level disagreements.

Develop and maintain the architecture and technology roadmap aligned with platform milestones.

Map and triage current technology solutions across UT Medical Center, main campus, and research teams.

Evaluate new technology requests for platform strategy fit and vendor viability.

Produce executive-level presentation materials to communicate roadmap and platform strategy.

Engage with clinical, operational, research, and administrative leaders to gather and translate requirements.

Lead change across short- and long-term objectives in complex, multi-stakeholder environments.

Supports Project Execution and Integration

Provide architectural oversight for major IT initiatives and transformation programs.

Ensure alignment of project execution with enterprise architecture and platform strategy.

Coordinate integration of cloud, on-premise, and hybrid systems.

Validate system performance, scalability, and security in collaboration with cybersecurity and infrastructure teams.

Conduct post-implementation reviews to assess solution effectiveness and alignment with architectural goals.

Participate in disaster recovery and business continuity planning exercises.

Support merger and acquisition due diligence and integration planning for acquired systems and platforms.

Contribute to IT capital planning and long-term investment strategies.

Anticipate technology shifts and position the organization to adapt.

Rapidly assimilate new technologies, platforms, tools, and frameworks.

Navigate complex governance structures and stakeholder dynamics.

Effectively manage change and shifting priorities.

Lead through uncertainty in large-scale transformation programs.

Gain stakeholder buy-in for architectural standards and transformation roadmaps.

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field.

Minimum of eight years of experience developing and overseeing solution architecture, enterprise systems design, or IT strategy.

Experience leading IT transformational initiatives in complex environments.

Master’s degree in Information Technology, Health Informatics, or a related field.

Experience in hospital, medical education, research, or related healthcare environments.

New facility technology-related technical design and implementation experience.

Experience with EHR systems such as Epic, ERP platforms, cloud infrastructure such as Microsoft Azure, and healthcare interoperability standards such as HL7 and FHIR.

Licenses/Registrations/Certifications:

AWS Certified Solutions Architect.

Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert.

Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent certification.

Standard office equipment.
