Deaprtment: REHABILITATION SERVICES

nJob Title: SPEECH – LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST

nJOB DESCRIPTION: Identifies, assesses and provides appropriate treatment for communication and swallowing function and their disorders. Counsels individuals with disorders of communication and swallowing function, their families, caregivers and other service providers about the disability and its management. Maintains a high level of professional expertise and assumes responsibility for professional growth and development.

nDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: May perform any or all of the below-listed job responsibilities. The primary emphasis of the job may vary by incumbent. May also perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

nnnEvaluates and develops a treatment plan.

n

nnDemonstrates a firm grasp of patient management.

n

nnPromotes effective communication and demonstrates cooperation and teamwork within the physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy departments, the facility, and other contacts.

n

nnContributes to the efficient and safe operation of the department.

n

n nSKILLS (QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, JUDGMENT):

nnnMust be eligible to practice speech-language pathology and has license through the University of the State of New York State Education Department, Office of the Professions, Division of Professional Licensing Services and practices in accordance with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association preferred practice patterns.

n

nnRelates well with various people and personalities.

n

nnDemonstrate good judgment and problem-solving skills in a variety of patient-related and staff situations.

n

nnDemonstrates maturity as related to emotional involvement.

n

nnDemonstrates the ability to work effectively with little supervision.

n

nnDemonstrates the ability to be flexible and adaptable.

nnDemonstrates effective and concise written language skills.

nnDemonstrates good formal and informal clinical teaching skills.

nnDemonstrates knowledge and understanding of speech-language pathology evaluation and treatment techniques as could be typical of a new graduate.

nnDemonstrates good time-management skills.

n

nnDemonstrates coordination, manual dexterity, visual and auditory acuity.

n

n nQUALIFICATIONS: Requires either a master's or doctoral degree and New York State licensure. Requires in-depth knowledge in the application of principles, methods and procedures of measurement, prediction, non-medical diagnosis, testing, counseling, consultation, rehabilitation and instruction related to the development and disorders of speech, voice, and/or language for the purpose of preventing, ameliorating or modifying such disorder conditions in individuals and/or groups of individuals.

nWORKING CONDITIONS Lifting requirements: Heavy - Includes prolonged sitting, and occasional lifting objects in excess of 50 pounds (with assistance) with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing 25 pounds or more.

nCategories of Exposure:

nInvolves an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids or tissues, or a potential for spills or splashes of them. (Use of appropriate protective measures are required for every employee engaged in Category I tasks.)

nnnPhysical, mental and verbal abuse from patients.

n

nnContinual activity all day long including sitting, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling equipment and patients.

n

nnFrequent compromise of schedule to meet needs of patients, their families and co-workers.

n

nnWork hours may include weekday, evening, weekend and emergency coverage.
