nThe Speech Language Pathologist (SLP or Speech Therapist) is responsible for the evaluation of patients and development of their treatment programs in accordance with the scope of the profession, the State Practice Act, Licensure and policies of UnityPoint Health. They function as an integral part of the rehabilitation team and provide rehabilitation services to patients across the lifespan, targeting ages specific to their clinical setting. The Speech Therapist is responsible for accurate documentation and billing as well as maintaining communication with referring providers and teammates, as ethically appropriate, to develop and implement a comprehensive plan of care best suited for the environment in which care is provided. (ie: acute hospital, inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient, in the home, etc.).

nResponsibilities

nClinical Excellence/Patient Care

nnnPerforms examination and evaluation to determine diagnosis and prognosis of patient/client and determine appropriate intervention to gain expected outcomes based on patient/client goals including a collaborative approach with patient/family and health care team.

n

nnUtilizes of appropriate Speech Therapy interventions to produce desired outcomes.

n

nnUtilizes of appropriate documentation and billing to communicate progress and status to physicians, other healthcare professionals and third party reimbursement.

n

nnUtilizes critical thinking in making independent judgements and maintains responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients.

n

nnAble to demonstrate the necessary skills and competencies of a speech therapist.

n

nnKeeps work area and equipment clean and orderly by maintaining and practicing hospital and departmental policies and procedures regarding safety and infection control.

n

n nDevelopment & Patient Education

nnnPerforms as a member of the Rehabilitation Department through joint interventions, communication and quality assurance programs and meetings.

n

nnContinues professional development and involvement in professional activities that enhance therapy practice by sharing knowledge through networking and research.

n

nnAssess and chooses teaching strategies appropriate to the patient/family needs including age, culture, gender, readiness to learn and level of comprehension.

n

nnDemonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential and actual concerns immediately.

n

n nQualifications

nnnEducation: Master’s degree from accredited curriculum in Speech Therapy

n

nnLicense/Certifications: Current licensure in good standing to practice in the state of Iowa. Must possess and maintain current BLS certification or obtain certification within three months from date of hire. Completion of four hours of stroke education prior to the end of orientation and annually.

n

nnKnowledge/Skills/Abilities: Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English. Multicultural sensitivity. Basic Computer skills. Customer/patient focused.

n

nnOther: Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.

n
