Job description
Land AnalystResponsible for the coaching and mentoring of other analysts. Responsible for analysis of leases, contracts, title opinions and other legal documentation to determine company ownership and obligations in these documents and associated wells. The individual independently maintains and updates a group of assigned properties and assists the team in resolving complex issues. This position requires minimal supervision.Essential Roles & ResponsibilitiesAnalyze various leases, contracts, agreements, and title documentation to summarize company ownership and determine common and more complex obligationsSet up new leases and other agreements in Quorum Land system according to company processes, proof work and approve agreements to ensure accuracy and data integrity of self and othersPerform regular lease maintenance, including research and analysis, to ensure accurate reporting; obtain missing data, when necessary.Review Second Set of Eyes on new lease set up and lease maintenanceManage payment calendar for assigned area, ensuring timely and accurate payment of rentals, extension options, shut-in payments, and minimum royalties.Work with regional land to ensure that obligation and expiration calendars monitored and completed in a timely mannerReview complicated Title Opinions, analyze mineral ownership, Gross and Net WorkingInterest ownership, depth severances, lease provisions, and chain of title while updating QuorumProvide monthly reporting requirements of acreage adjustments to Landman and ManagersAssist manager with quarterly and year-end reportingReview monthly Data Integrity reports and assign to LR Analyst to make appropriate Quorum updatesPrepare correspondence – cover letters, inquiries, requests, and inter-company communications.Perform and manage special projects as assigned to support Land Administration and Company goalsAssist with Due Diligence for company acquisitions and divestituresFollow, improve upon, and create new departmental processes to ensure efficiency, accuracy, consistency, and data integrityConduct business with the highest ethical standards; demonstrate decision-making skills that ensure the safety of all persons associated with SM facilitiesAnalyze various forms, including complex title, lease and contract documentation to summarize company ownership and obligationsAssist with due diligence for company acquisitions and divestitures Create and generate detailed and complex analysis of leases and contractsEnsure timely and accurate payment of rentals, shut-in payments and minimum royaltiesResolve administrative and technical issuesCommunicate and document requests and issues with lease, contracts or other legal documentsReview leases, understand and determine shut-in and minimum royaltySet up new leases and contracts in Land system, proof work and approve all agreements being created in order to ensure accuracy and data integrityMake and oversee ownership changes and clean-up of lease recordsPerform general lease records maintenance in land system, ensure accurate and thorough documentationPerform special projects as assigned to support Lease Records Department and Company goalsConduct business with the highest ethical standards; demonstrate decision-making skills that ensure the safety of all persons associated with SM facilitiesOther duties as assignedComputer/Software ApplicationsDemonstrate strong understanding of Office/PC skills and effective use of Microsoft Office applications and the ability to make effective use of company & industry specific software, such as SPEX, TRRC Website, County Records search, and data analytic tools such as Power BI and Spotfire.Strong understanding of Quorum applications, including ability to build and modify basic QQM queries.Role-Specific Technical Knowledge & SkillsAbility to understand, summarize and report company ownership and obligations for assigned area.Ability to account for and reconcile acreage changes each month/quarter and answer questions regarding acreage from regional land, accounting, audit, and other departments.Ability to calculate and maintain company participation on leases.Proficient understanding and knowledge of acquisition/divestiture process.Ability to train and mentor lower-level analystsTypical EducationBachelor's Degree in Law, Petroleum Management or Business preferredTypical ExperienceMinimum of 8 years of applicable experienceSM Energy offers competitive compensation and benefits programs which include, but are not limited to, variable pay, health care coverage, retirement plan, protection coverage, time off and leave programs, training and development opportunities and a range of allowances connected to specific work situations.Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the position is filled.
