Stationary EngineerUT MD Anderson is seeking a skilled Stationary Engineer to support the operation and reliability of central utility systems that are critical to patient care, research, and facility operations. The Stationary Engineer plays a key role in ensuring the continuous functionality and efficiency of essential building systems, including chilled water, steam, compressed air, vacuum, and heating hot water systems. This position requires a high level of technical expertise and the ability to monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain complex infrastructure.UT MD Anderson is a leading institution focused on cancer care, research, education, and prevention. The Stationary Engineer contributes directly to this mission by maintaining safe, efficient, and compliant building systems across campus operations. The Stationary Engineer ensures that all central utility systems are optimized and functioning at peak performance to support the organization's world-class facilities. The ideal candidate brings strong technical knowledge in utility systems operations, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting. This individual demonstrates experience working with building automation systems, process water chemistry, and central plant equipment. Relevant certifications or licenses in boiler operation or stationary engineering are preferred, along with hands-on experience in a healthcare, research, or large institutional environment.Salary Range: $69,000 (minimum) - $86,000 (midpoint) - $103,000 (maximum) Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 6:30a.m. – 3:00p.m., onsite, Bastrop campus Why Us? UT MD Anderson supports employee well-being while fostering an environment focused on innovation, performance excellence, and operational reliability. • Employer-paid medical coverage starting day one for employees working 30+ hours/week, plus optional group dental, vision, life, AD&D, and disability insurance. • Accruals for PTO and Extended Illness Bank, plus paid holidays, wellness, childcare, and other leave options. • Tuition Assistance Program after six months of service and access to extensive wellness, fitness, and employee resource groups. • Defined-benefit pension through the Teachers Retirement System, voluntary retirement plans, and employer-paid life and reduced salary protection programs.Responsibilities Utility Systems Operation & Optimization • Operate central utility systems including chilled water, steam, compressed air, vacuum, and heating hot water systems. • Optimize use of natural resources such as electricity, natural gas, water, and sewer systems. • Monitor equipment using building automation systems (BAS). • Analyze system performance and adjust operations for energy efficiency and reliability. • Conduct routine route checks and complete shift check sheets. • Document daily equipment activity and system performance data. Maintenance, Troubleshooting & Repair • Perform preventative maintenance on boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, and related systems. • Troubleshoot system malfunctions and identify root causes. • Execute corrective repairs or secure equipment and initiate service requests. • Respond to equipment alarms and triage critical system failures. • Investigate recurring issues and implement corrective actions to prevent future failures. • Perform process water chemistry testing and adjust treatment as needed. Water Systems Monitoring & Compliance • Conduct water chemistry analysis and maintain optimal conditions. • Record and document test results and chemical adjustments. • Maintain water usage logs, including city, well, make-up, and blowdown meter readings. • Ensure compliance with all regulatory inspection requirements. • Coordinate and support inspections by external agencies. Work Coordination & Communication • Respond to facility alarms, customer service requests, and fire alarms. • Coordinate work orders and manage backlog for preventative and corrective maintenance. • Communicate system status updates with internal teams and stakeholders. • Serve as point of contact for vendors and contractors. • Oversee contractor work to ensure compliance with standards and requirements. • Order materials and maintain inventory for system operations. Support, Training & Continuous Improvement • Assist in training and orientation of maintenance staff. • Provide cross-functional support to refrigeration, electrical, plumbing, and maintenance teams. • Participate in process improvement initiatives and operational reviews. • Contribute to project design reviews and development of Owner's Design Guidelines. • Inspect completed work to confirm quality and compliance. • Prepare and submit operational and performance reports.EDUCATIONRequired: High School Diploma or EquivalentPreferred: Vocational school or apprenticeship training.WORK EXPERIENCERequired: Four years Experience working with boiler systems, chiller/cooling towers, and/or water treatment systems in a large central physical plant.LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONSPreferred: First or Second Grade Licensed Stationary Engineer.Preferred: Class D Water Operator license issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.Preferred: UC-EPA - Universal Certification Universal Certification by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).Preferred: TDL - Texas Drivers License Valid Class A, B or C Texas driver's license and eligible to drive State and institutional vehicles.The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center offers excellent benefits, including medical, dental, paid time off, retirement, tuition benefits, educational opportunities, and individual and team recognition.
