Stationary EngineerThe Adler Planetarium connects people to the universe and each other. Whether introducing a guest to the Ring Nebula, a neighborhood school to a community partner, a research team to a network of citizen scientists, or one staff member to another, the Adler's focus on meaningful connections dates back nearly a century.Today, the museum typically hosts close to 400,000 visitors annually and reaches millions more through youth STEAM programs, neighborhood skywatching events, online citizen science, and other outreach efforts. With the Adler's support, people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities gain the confidence to learn more about science and space discovery, and to explore their universe together under the sky we all share.The Stationary Engineer's primary role is to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair facility equipment across all building systems. The Stationary Engineer must be familiar with and demonstrate technical expertise in building mechanical systems such as low-pressure boiler systems, chillers, plumbing, fire safety systems, electrical, carpentry, and other building components. This is a union position with the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) of Chicago, Illinois, and vicinity Local 399.The Adler Planetarium is seeking a Full-Time Stationary Engineer to join our dynamic team located on Chicago's Museum Campus. This individual will be responsible for:Providing proper upkeep of all mechanical equipment, including inspection, troubleshooting, and necessary repairs.Preventative maintenance on all building systems.Maintaining proper building temperatures throughout the facility each season.Working with all exterior mechanical vendors to ensure adequate maintenance.Keeping an organized work order schedule and meeting deadlines.Ability to multitask for operational needs and special requests.The Work ScheduleThe typical work schedule for this position is 40 hours per week: Wednesday 2:30-10:30 pm and Thursday-Sunday 10:30 am-6:30 pm. Familiar with building automation systems, life systems, and evacuation procedures. Respond to all emergencies calmly and systematically. Good time management, a team player, and a good listener. Able to follow through with proven results.Preferred Qualifications:Bachelor's Degree or 5 years of experience working as a Stationary Engineer within the City of Chicago.CFC CertificationMinimum of 1 year of experience working in a museum facility.The Adler Planetarium is dedicated to complying with its Equal Opportunity employer obligations.
