Checkers will utilize paperwork, and often use handheld computerized scanners. They find, evaluate, record all cargo, and support other needs of the operation. If they find damages to containers or cargo, missing cargo, or loose cargo, they alert supervisors before discharging.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesReceives cargo to be exportedAssists with loading export cargo to vesselsReceives import cargo from vesselsUtilizes paperwork and handheld devices to inventory cargoVerifies paperwork to match cargo being received or exported is aligned with vessel and the port of discharge the cargo is designated forVerifies cargo weights and dimensions to ensure that equipment being utilized for operations is within safe working capacityCommunicates via 2-way radio with drivers, clerks, warehouse personnel, security guards to coordinate logistics of cargo operationsLocates and verifies all cargo that is on the load listInspects and documents condition of cargo prior to any movement of cargoAppropriately marks each piece of cargoCompliance with the company safety plan, including utilization of required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times when in a work zoneUtilizes hand-eye coordination, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, dexterity, and precision during their daily work assignmentsPerforms other duties as assignedQualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and be able to pass and/or obtain all reporting, testing, and certifications as required for this position and location.
