Job description
Sterile Processing TechnicianHOURLY RANGE: $21.20 - $28.76The work involves performing functions related to infection control such as cleaning, assembling, inspecting and sterilizing instruments and medical equipment for the Operating Room ("OR") at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation. In addition to providing sterile products, the incumbent also delivers specimens to pathology and the blood bank, transports patients and prepares the OR for receiving the patient which includes setting up case carts for daily OR schedules. Work is performed under the direct supervision of higher-level personnel. Supervision is not a function of this position. Does related work as required.TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:Inspects, cleans, sterilizes and assembles surgical instruments, trays/sets and other medical equipment and supplies according to prescribed procedures and techniques;Operates sterilization and decontamination equipment;Maintains logs and records relating to sterilization process;Delivers trays, supplies and equipment to OR; removes dirty carts from OR and takes to decontamination area;Fills orders for medical equipment/supplies; distributes and picks-up equipment, instruments and other medical supplies to and from various locations throughout the hospital;Performs quality control through daily testing and cleaning to assure sterilization equipment and instruments are functioning properly;Inspects instruments for sharpness and proper function; oils and lubricates as needed;Utilizes a computer to generate preference cards for setting up case carts, completing case cart accountability sheets and access various tracking systems;Maintains and replenishes supplies and equipment for the OR;Removes out dated materials; places orders for supplies and receives and stores supplies;Transports patients to and from the OR in accordance with OR policy; cares for patients' personal belongings;Delivers specimens to proper areas as requested;Assists in keeping the OR and Prep & Pak work areas clean and organized.FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of various decontamination and sterilization techniques; good knowledge of hospital supplies used for patient care; working knowledge of common terminology used to describe hospital supplies; working knowledge of inventory control; ability to operate various sterilization and decontamination equipment; ability to read and understand written material; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, ability to use a computer; initiative; good judgment; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:The incumbent must apply for the Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) or Certified Registered Central Services Technician (CRCST) exam within two (2) months of the date he/she completes four hundred (400) hours of work as a Sterile Processing Technician;Possession of a Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) Certification as issued by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) within eighteen (18) months of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment; or:Possession of a Certified Registered Central Services Technician (CRCST) Certification as issued by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) within eighteen (18) months of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience by Erie CountyEqual Opportunity Employer This employer is required to notify all applicants of their rights pursuant to federal employment laws.
